As you may have read from my welcoming, I am a player of European Air War, an incredible game, made by microprose. I am part of a Jagdgeschwader, number 5 to be exactly.
Jg5 is a german squadron that used to be flying in WW2. I decided to join JG5 when I saw that they needed pilots. The reason why I joined them is that I just love german planes from the second world war.
There is not a single bit of nazism or racism in my mind!! I just play this sim because I like sims!
Some notes :
I prefer flying the fw-190A8, because of its superior firepower. With her 4x20MM and 2x13MM guns you will demolish your target within two tenths of a second if you are skilled. But the fw-190A8 is not that agile anymore, compared to the A4 version. So now we have the spitfire to cope with. To deal with a spitfire in combat needs a different approach. Where you could go into a turning fight with other planes, the spitfire is practically unbeatable in that kind of fight. Here the wingman comes in. Also the so called "boom and zoom" tactic is very useful, if just to stay alive.
The BF-109 is a completely different plane. It has speed and good climbing ability. There are, however different version as well, from the bf-109E to the bf-109K. The bf-109 has better change to get rid of a bandit on your tail, at least that is my experience. It is easier to fool the enemy pilot, by using strange manouvers.
Tactics when flying against :
P-47
The p-47 is a heavy aircraft. This means that it will dive like a rock and climb like a cow. When you are on his tail and he dives, it will probably take you some time to close the distance.
To outmaneuver a p-47 (when he is on your tail) is not very difficult, because it will lose energy rapidly, so a tight turn should make him brake away or stall. Even better is to initiate a climbing turn. Almost any aircraft climbs faster than a p-47.
Hurricane
The only big disadvantage about the hurricane is its lack of speed. So take a dive and you will get rid of him. Do not go into a turning fight with this one. This plane has the tightest turning radius of all planes.
Spitfire
The spitfire is a nasty thing do deal with when flying a german plane. It has almost everything you want as a pilot, speed and good turning ability. There are versions of the spit which vary in characteristics. For example the IA version has light armament, this is nice to know when he is chasing your ass. Later versions of the spitfire have enough punch to put you down!
Best thing to do when you are 1 on 1 with a spit. Try to get into a good attacking position before he does. If this fails and the enemy pilot is skilled, you will be shot down.
Try do go head on and blaze away with your guns, all of them! Even when his engine is just smoking, he is still dangerous.
To succesfully deal with the spitfire you need to practise "lead/wingman" tactics. Or as I said earlier, "boom and zoom" tactics. This means going head on, fire, turn and go head on again until you get him.
Typhoon / tempest
I'll mention these two planes together because they are very alike.
These babies were designed for ground attack, so they have big guns and a high speed.
They also can turn pretty good. The most problems you will have is trying to keep up with them.
Once you are behind him it is fairly easy to knock him down.
When he is on your tail, do not dive away, he will keep up with you, except when you fly a me-262.
The roll-rate of the typhoon / tempest is not very good. Jinking (heavy turning left and right) when he is on your tail is the best thing to do.
