Bomber Group. This group was based in East Anglia and was assigned
the task of protecting the Lancasters and Halifax aircraft of
Bomber Command's main force by waging, with various electronic
countermeasures devices, a strange war in the ether - jamming or
interfering with German radar and radio signals and with the
ground controllers' radio-telephone instructions to German night
fighters. These highly secret - and extremely effective - 'Jostle', 'Piperack'
and 'Mandrel' missions were part of No 100 Groups rapidly growing
electronic warefare arsenal. This particular aircraft, KJ109 with aircraft code 6G-F was a highly
modified B-17G-55; the chin and ball turrets having been removed to
make way for a vast assortment of powerful electronics. It operated
from Oulton with No 223 squadron.
