DOUGLAS C-47 DAKOTA:

Developed originally as a civil airliner, the Douglas DC-3
first flew in December 1935. The military C-47 differed from
the DC-3 principally in its stronger cabin floor and rear
fuselage, large loading doors and 1,200 hp Pratt & Whitney
R-1830-92 engines.

In the RAF the C-47 and its derivatives were named Dakota
(the choice being alliterative rather than geographically
significant), the Dakota I corresponding to the C-47, the
Dakota II to the C-53, the Dakota III to the C-47A and the
Dakota IV to the C-47B. Some 1,895 aircraft served with 25
RAF squadrons, first joining No 31 Squadron on the Burma
front in June 1942. It remained with the RAF until replaced
by the Vickers Valetta in 1950.

This particular aircraft was a Dakota III of no 24 Squadron,
RAF. The squadron was a communications unit, based at Hendon
during World War 2, and flew Dakotas on mail and VIP services
to Malta from 1943 onwards.

General Eisenhower is on record as having stated that the
C-47 was one of four principal instruments of Allied victory in
World War 2 (the others being the bazooka, Jeep and atom bomb).

have started. If only one engine is running, press the
"E" key again untill the second engine starts.

This aircraft is fitted with the Sperry Mk111 autopilot. For
night operations, it is fitted with a fully variable clock,
navigation lights, landing lights and BMP texturing for night
visibility. It is also fitted with the RAF 662 ADF.
