SPECIFICATIONS:

Powerplant: Two Daimler Benz DB 603A V-12 liquid cooled engines rated at
            1,750 hp for take-off, 1,850 hp at 6,890 ft and 1,625 hp at
            18,700 ft.

Armament: Two fixed 20-mm MG151 cannon with 350 r.p.g. firing forward.
   Four fixed 7.9-mm MG17 machine guns with 1,000 r.p.g. firing forward.
   Two flexible 13-mm MG131 machine guns with 500 r.p.g.in remotely-
          controlled FDSL lateral barbettes.

Bomb Load: Two SC 500 bombs in bomb-bay under cockpit.

HISTORY:

Even before hostilities broke out, Willy Messerschmitt was working on a
successor to the BF 110 Zerstorer. This aircraft, the Me 210 first flew
on 5 september 1939 but exhibited unacceptable handling in both the yawing
and pitching planes. Solutions to the handling problem were not easily found
and it was not until March 1942 that good flying qualities were achieved
by fitting a longer and deeper rear fuselage, a revised wing with straight
taper and outer-wing slats, more powerful engines, and many other changes.
To avoid the stigma attached to the Me210, this highly modified aircraft
was designated the Me 410.

Although never rivalling the de Havilland Mosquito in terms of versatility
or performance, the Me 410 did introduce a major increase in performance
over the Bf 110 that had previously equipped the Zerstorergesschwader.

The aircraft certainly had some notable features, including a bomb-bay
mounted under the nose and forward cockpit which was capable of carrying
two 500 kg bombs. The 13-mm MG131 barbettes were also notable; each gun
traversing through 70 deg above and below the aircraft datum and through
40 deg of azimuth.

Computer Model:

This model has a variable clock, navigation lights and a landing light for
night operations. It is also fitted with an ADF tuner and a zero reader
homing indicator located on the central autopilot panel. A dive-brake
(/ key) is fitted to control speed while dive-bombing.

A standby airspeed indicator (reading mph) and altimeter (reading feet) is
fitted on the right panel segment for those that experience difficulty
with the main metric instruments.

The popup ADF list has also been added to this Aircraft. Press Shify + 2 to
activate.

DIVE-Bombing

In the real aircraft, the pilot could see the ground immediately ahead as
the front windscreen panels extended to floor level; this being particularly
useful when positioning for a dive-bombing attack which was executed in a 60
degree dive. Dive-bombing with this model will require some practise and is
simulated in the following manner:
 

1. Press the AP ON/OFF swich to the right of the other light switches. The
   autopilot panel will disappear to reveal a dive-bombing sight.
2. Select a map view (SHIFT + ]).
3. Size the map view until it is just smaller than the black square in the
   bottom centre of the instrument panel.
4. Drag the map view into that square.
5. Expand the map view until it fills the square and the red cross on the map
   alignes with the red cross in the square.
6. Fly the aircraft at 8,000 ft, or above, towards the target.
7. Just before the target on the map reaches the edge of the red circle, roll
   the aircraft inverted, select the dive-brake out, and pull the nose down
   until the cockpit's gun sight is just above the target.
8. Roll out and place the gun sight accurately on the target and hold it there
   untill 5,000 ft.
9. Release the bombs in salvo at 5000 ft.
19. Pull out of the dive and retract the dive-brake.
11. Watch for bomb impact in the map window.

Note: 60 degrees is very steep and appears much steeper than it really is to
      the pilot. Initially, you should feel quite alarmed at this steep
      angle but you will get used to it. If your bombs drop short of the
      target, you must increase the dive angle next time around. Practise
      dive-bombing with ammunition set to unlimited.
