Cirque du Soliel
Have you ever experienced beauty so intense that tears of joy come to your eyes just thinking about it? If so, or if not, then you should see Cirque du Soliel for yourself. Starting in 1984 as a collection of street performers intent on establishing a circus tradition in Canada, they have gone on to embody everything good within the performing arts: original live music, archetypal imagery, soaring stage shows, performances of the human spirit, charity to their fellow man. Seven years later, they are an international phenomenon.
So where does such an organization fit into my philosophy? Perhaps merely as a soaring counterpoint to my cathartic love of the Blues. One experiences the Blues to bring out the pain in the joy of singing; to burn out the sorrow; to live through the music; to know that someone is sharing in your suffering. After all, a burden shared is a burden divided.
Whether listening to the music, or seeing a production (live or on tape), Cirque du Soliel is the joy that is shared; the joy that is multiplied. It is a step beyond the receptive, nuturing, earthy Yin of the Blues and into the brilliant heavenly Yang of the Cosmos. Both contain, and point, to the other. Both fill and complete my life.
