Date : Mon, 15 Oct 2001 11:25:31 -0500

> 1. When is a spell "targeted"?

When it is specifically chosen to receive the effect of the spell, as opposed to simply being within range of the spell's effect. As for the timing, a disk is "targeted" at the time of the spell's effect.

> 2. What qualifies a disk as being the target of a spell?

See above.

> 3a. Example: Brother Dalmu grabs a wayward disk 24" away with the twister  spell. Is this disk targeted?

Yes.

> 3b. Dalmu wishes to grab three other disks, as part of the twister spell,  that are within 6" of an Iron Golem. Are these disks "targeted"?

No... These three disks are affected by the spell (because they are within range of the target). For a similar example, see the "Feet of Clay" spell.

> 4. Several people have pledged to buy the Blood and Prophecy boxed set.  Have you looked at the discussion board dated 5 Oct.? Will this product go on main line production? If not, will you offer limited runs over the net?

It's too soon to answer either of those questions. I will say that it's gratifying to see the community rallying behind the product like this.

> 5. Would you copy me in for rulings replies for all disk games. I'm trying my best to provide a central rulings repository on my website:  http://www.fortunecity.com/underworld/rpg/1235/id57.htm

Sure!  While I never look forward to slogging through your compiled list of questions, it is easier than tackling the questions one at a time.

Wow. Here's an old one!

> Bottom line: I would rule that the (Drallus) Elder can use its movement after ambush against disks with a "cannot activate to attack" clause based on the similarity to the Urotok ruling; but will submit this to Darrell as it contains that "normally" word....

Move normally: *as if* it were activating to move. Yes, it may end its
movement on an enemy disk. This is not an attack (as it activated to use its SA, and not to move), but it is now in a state of *attacking*.

Darrell

> When are counters "missile counters"? We now have a plethora of
placed and dropped counters that are causing some confusion: Elven Sniper; Frogs of Muurkra; Infectors; Lady Daqan; Flaming Phoenix; Net-Master; Grub-lobber; etc.

If it's referred to as "missile:XXX" then it's a missile. Note that "like a
missile" doesn't count.

> Kam'llotan Uthuk's turn in the battle segment, and in the presence of a

It's Toughness is 2. It is no longer attacking a disk (as the disk it was
pinning is now dead).

>A vampire receives 10 points of damage within range of a Vampire Lord.
> How many wounds does the Vampire Lord receive?

It receives 2 wounds and is killed.

> Is an activated Sand Widow, subsequently destroyed, unactivated when she ambushes a third level spellcaster?

Yes.

Yes.

SA: A to give an Instant Blow equal to the number of friendly T´kalla Uthuk Disks within 6" to an enemy Disk within 12".

No, just decreasingly useful as the T'kalla Uthuk die off one by one.

> conflicting rulings....  From an earlier question:

(The conflicting rulings are below.)

The original ruling stands. No, you cannot use Tyrnask Rex X'ru to give a
wound to a disk that cannot take a wound. If the disk in question cannot
take a wound, then it cannot have the spell disk placed on it.

> [14 May 2001 Fairy Swarms and Noz Arrack: are only allowed to take one wound per turn (the ruling on FS only refers to additional damage).  May enemy disks such as Witherers or Desert Witches give them additional wounds in a turn?
May "friendly" disks such as TRexXru give them additional wounds in a turn in exchange for an effect?
Your answer: No, and no.]

>
> I hope that you remember the conversation....  If not, this is (to the
best of my ability) what the crux seems to be: TRexXru has the capability to place a spell disk on a creature disk and give that creature disk a wound.  The hypothesis is that one can give a fairy swarm more than one wound per turn using TRexXru's "spell disk" ability.  In the earlier ruling it would seem that this is illegal and violates the "one wound per turn" that the Fairy Swarm is supposed to be able to take.  On the other hand, IF this garrison commander properly asked the question, and was given the ok to give the fairy swarm multiple wounds vis-a-vis TRexXru, then we need to know if this is a special ruling case or if the previous ruling is overturned?
Certainly I'd like to mate up the ever-popular fairy swarms with a
Witherer or two....  Or maybe the first fairy swarm ruling about taking multiple wounds per turn should be dropped....

 > 1) Guildmaster: What does "as if the Guildmaster were firing" mean?

It means that the Missile: Arrows disks in question may fire upon any target that would be a legal target of the Guildmaster if the Guildmaster were a Missile: Arrow disk.

> 2) If a guildmaster is in a ruins do you get six more inches?

No.

> 3) What if the archer but not the Guildmaster is in a ruins?

Only if you are measuring range from the archer and not the Guildmaster.

> 4) What if both the archer and the Guildmaster are in a ruins?

Then it probably doesn't matter, since there would be so little difference
between measuring range from the archer and measuring range from the
Guildmaster. In fact, you'd would be better to measure range from the
archer, since you get the extra 6".

> 5) If the archer deriving the benefit from the Guildmaster has its Line of
> Sight blocked by a missile barrier, and the Guildmaster does not, can the archer fire at the target?

Yes.

> 6) Conversely, if the Guildmaster's Line of Sight is blocked by a missile
> barrier and the archer's is not, may the archer benefit from the
> Guildmaster?

No.

> 7) What if both are blocked by the barrier?

Then the archer cannot fire on the target.

> 8)Coercion: Target player must immediately make three Activations, just as if it were that player's turn. If the target player Activates less than
> three Disks, he may not Activate again this round.  May a player cast this upon himself, i.e., [activate][activate][coercion][activate][activate][activate] before his
opponent can activate?

Yes.

> 9) Kodo is pinning a disk and Fa'ta uses her SA to deliver an instant blow to the disk pinned by Kodo equal to Kodo's attack--enough to kill said pinned disk. Did Kodo 'help kill' that disk and can he enslave it?

No.

> 10)Eyes of the Dead: Enemy Disks pinned by Eyes may be the target of
Spells cast by friendly Spellcasters, regardless of range.
a) Does this mean that the spell is cast upon the pinned disk as if the
spellcaster were in place of (i.e. the spellcaster were pinning) the Eyes
of the Dead?

No.

> b) May I activate my spellcaster to cast fireball using the Eyes of the
> Dead?  If so, is the fireball still traced from the spellcaster, or is it
> traced from the Eyes of the Dead (in effect, automatically hitting)?

The Fireball spell has no target and is not cast "on" a disk. Therefore, you
may not use the Eyes of the Dead to help cast it.

> 11) If a Disk touching Soul Leech recieves a Wound, the Wound is always given to Soul Leech instead. If Soul Leech dies, it gives an Instant Blow (10) to all Disks within 6".
> Ok, someone on the board wants to know what happens when two, or more, soul leeches are in contact with each other and receive damage?

Let's call this errata: If a non-Soul Leech disk touching a Soul Leech
receive a wound, the wound is always given to Soul Leech instead.

In other words, one Soul Leech cannot take a wound from another.

> 12)  If I kill an opponent's Ghost Ship, then cast Resurrect, bringing it
> back into play on my side, can I then use it to
a)produce free Undead champions (say, Masters of Bones) if I'm not playing Undead, or
b)Undead evil disks if I'm playing a good army?

The Disk Council conferred for some time on this one, and in the end decided that yes, good and non-undead armies can use the Ghost Ship to bring undead (including champions) into play.

> (1) The description for the Battlegnash scenario indicates you get an additional 10 points toward the victory conditions if you have sole control of the center disk. One player insists this is a cumulative 10 points that accrues each round you have sole control of the center, and permanently adds to your total each time. The rest of us understood this be a situational 10 points that adds to your total at that time, but goes away once that round is over. Any opinions on which is correct?

The one player is wrong; the rest of you are correct.

> (2) When a player with a Flesh Molder kills a disk within 6 inches of the Flesh Molder, does that player get the points for the kill? The disk text says "If you kill an enemy Disk within 6" of an unpinned Flesh Molder, do not remove that Disk but during Remove Counter Segment transform it into a Rampaging Homunculus under your Control." To me, this says you do indeed kill the disk and should therefore get points for it.

You are correct: the disk is killed, and you get the points for killing it.

> (3) If a disk killed during the activation phase is within 6 inches of the Flesh Molder, the disk text for the Flesh Molder states that the dead disk remains. If this dead disk were pinning another disk, we know now that it is not involved in combat, but does it continue to pin that disk, or is that disk now free to move from beneath the dead disk?

Good question! I'd say it can move, as the dead disk is merely a
place-holder at this point, and not really in the battle.

> (4) Finally, can you use a Fire Elemental or a Flaming Phoenix place a fireball counter on any disk or only on enemy disks?

You may place them on friendly disks if you like.

Darrell Hardy
FFG

14 May 2001
> 1) Ghost Ship: how many counters are removed when you buy a disk? An amount equal to the disk cost or all of the disks if you buy any unit?

You must remove *all counters* from the ship.

> 2) Rampaging Humunculi and Ykara Wild: Is one restricted to the amount of disks one has collected (has on hand), or can one "proxy" disks as needed?

Proxy disks are not allowed.

> 3) Raven the Foretold: what is the effect of "calm" upon the constantly berserking units?

The constantly berserking disks are immune to the "Calm" spell.

> 4) Naphaim Spy: at what time(s) is the effect of this disk checked?  When one has opponent's champions moving in and out of the spy's range, during the turn, it can get a bit confusing.

Check at the beginning of your activation turn. If there is a Spy in effect, you must Activate five disks instead of three.

> 5)  Sure Aim: there are two seemingly contradictory rulings in existence over the placing of missiles using sure aim.  Definitively, to include the Viper Legion, Ykhizdal, and any others, may you place a missile(s), using sure aim, so that a single missile damages/effects more than one disk?

Normally, when placing a missile counter, you may place it so that it
damages/affects multiple disks.

"Sure Aim" is the exception, as it allows you to place the missiles on only a *single disk*.

> 6) Flipping: may a disk rotate on its axis so as to create a shorter
flip, or must the disk flip fully each time it flips?

No, a disk may not rotate; it must flip fully each time it flips.

> 7)  Measuring distances: may one measure an opponents distances, excluding missile fire and movement?

Yes.

> 8)  Flesh Molder: a "killed" disk is not removed.  How does this disk
interact physically with other disks?  Does it deliver damage to an enemy disk it is pinning?

No. It effectively has "-" AT, D, and T.

>Would global effects (like Thalos) still work?

Stat modifiers don't work.

>  How does reanimate resolve vis-a-vis FM?  How do disks like the Meat Wagon and Sand Widow resolve vis-a-vis FM?

Reanimators, Sand Widows, and those disks that ambush the Meat Wagon when destroyed are *not* subject to the Flesh Molder. Their respective effects take place before the FM's transformation.

> 9) Fairy Swarms and Noz Arrack: are only allowed to take one wound per turn (the ruling on FS only refers to additional damage).  May enemy disks such as Witherers or Desert Witches give them additional wounds in a turn?  May "friendly" disks such as TRexXru give them additional wounds in a turn in exchange for an effect?

No, and no.

> 10)  We usually play a free for all, timed by turns game where you get a point for each point of army points you kill, plus, at the end of the
timed game, whatever disks you have on the central land piece, you get as many points as their army value is. But, when playing undead, the reanimate is a problem. We aren't sure if we should count them or not, when you kill them.
I would say yes, but the guy who plays 'em says no. And I have Sand
Widows, which are similar to reanimate, and again don't know if they should count to victory points when "killed". A third question about this is something like Ressurect. Do the points get taken away from the player who killed the ressurecting disk, or not?

You get points for a reanimating disk *every time* you kill it. The same
thing would be true for the Sand Widow. And no, you don't lose points for the kill if the disk is resurrected.

> Raven Fanatic: (from a spoiler- no guarantees on exact text)
"First Blow. During Remove Counters, if there are friendly Disks within 6", you must sacrifice either Fanatic or one of those disks."
If I have three fanatics and a grug within 6" of each other, can I sac the
grug to satisfy all three fanatics?

Yes.

> If that is OK I still have three fanatics within 6" during the remove counters phase. Do I have to keep sacrificing until I am left with one?

No.

> Situation 1. I have two Raven Fanatics within 6" of each other and no
other friendly disks nearby. Given the Fanatic's text and quick intuitive logic (oxymoron?), one should die. But is it only one?

Yes, only one. You get to choose which one.

> Can I sac an enemy disk I happen to currently 'control'? I think yes.

Yes.

> 12)  Is a destroyed Sand Widow activated?

No.

> 13) Do you get points for destroying the Sand Widow?

Yes. Each time you destroy it.

> 14) How many points do you get for destroying a transformed disk?

The amount of the original disk.

> 15) In a game where you must get a number of points in an area for
> control/to win, how many points does a transformed disk count as?

The original.

> 16) The Magma Bomber (et al.) instantly destroys a disk within range of a Flesh Molder.  The Insta-destroy says take it away, the Flesh Molder says keep it around.  What happens to the "insta-destroyed disk"?

It stays.

> 17) The Magma Bomber (et al.) instantly destroys a disk within range of a Flesh Molder, then the flesh molder moves away.  What happens to the "insta-destroyed" disk?

It stays (though you may want to put a counter on it to remember what a dead disk is doing in the middle of the field)

> 18) The power curve of the game is changing.  The 3pt champion disk "Abaley Guard" and the 4pt non-champion disk "Blood Harvesters" are every bit as good/dangerous as the Legions of Bone.  Would you please remove the LoB from the restricted lists?

Duly noted.

> 19)  This question has come up many times on disks that take a wound for another disk, i.e., Soul Leech; Daqan Defender; Vampire Lord; et al.: When a disk that will benefit from one of the above has only one wound capacity, and it will take damage enough to have dealt to it multiple wounds, is the benefitting disk a) saved from destruction and the wound taker receives one wound, or b) saved from destruction and the wound taker receives multiple wounds, or c) the wound taker receives one wound and the additional damage
destroys the benefitting disk, or d) an explanation that I haven't figured out yet?

b and c. The wound-taker can receive damage (and wounds) only to its
capacity. Any damage beyond that goes to the "benefitting disk."

 1) I'm working on this "anti-everything" Orc army and was considering putting a Darkwood Ogre in it. The question involves DO and Fireball: what is the "timing" of the spell and skill?  Darkwood Ogre: Whenever a spell is cast within 12" of Ogre, Ogre may immediately give an Instant Blow (3) to any enemy disk within 6" of Ogre. (Orc)  Take the instance of a 2 wound, 4 toughness disk. Is the fireball damage applied, followed by the IB3 and killing the disk, or is the IB3 applied (doing nothing) and then the fireball damage, leaving the disk wounded?  Since the the spell has to be "cast", I'm leaning toward the destruction of the example disk; but I can see how it could be debated....

Yes, the spell is cast, then the Ogre gives its Instant Blow.

2) This came up last night in a game: The legion rulebook defines "attack" and "attacking", but not "attacked". How does this relate to the Dragon Ambassador's skill? To wit, can the plethora of ways to not 'A to move and end that movement pinning an enemy unit' enable said units to possibly pin the Ambassador?

Yes.

Sunday, February 18, 2001 - 09:37 pm

My idea was to have a Garnoth "Umbrella" made up of 2 peasants and Garnoth over my Keeper of the Mist. This would allow me massive spell power that could not be easily removed.

Darrell and Tim both corrected my misconception. There are no 'layers' as such EXCEPT in a single battle stack. That is, in the below example,

---Disk A---
---Disk B---
---Disk C---

Disk A is pinning disk B, B pins C, A does not pin C, BUT, in the below example,

-------Disk A-------
---Disk B---
---Disk C--- ---Disk D---

Disk A pins both Disk B and D (but obviously not C).

Although my first reaction was that I couldn't believe the ruling (and that I'd been playing it wrong for so long), I now see the logic behind it.

For example, I used vampires on peasants to shield the 'bones' in the Oborus story-line event. It made it too easy. Nothing could ever get to the bones, yet I wasn't truly 'pinning' them.

Anyway, just some observations before we create a major misunderstanding that was already clarified by FFG at Origins.

Just received an email back from Darrell Hardy. The monkey can activate to pin the Fenryn Guard and it won't be destroyed. Find below a copy of that section of the email. It's my question followed by his response.

> Finally, I have a question about Chagr Monkey and Fenryn Guard. If a
> Monkey uses it's SA to ambush the Fenryn Guard, would the monkey be instantly destroyed? I think that it would, but I need to be sure for my players.

No. Only Disks with a T of 5 or less that Attack (that is, Activate to move
then end their movement pinning) the Guard are instantly destroyed.

REG: BLACKSMITH.

A Blacksmith cannot boost a disk that is
already boosted by a Blacksmith. This is
true even if the same Blacksmith removes his
A counter, he still may not boost the same Disk again.

In summary, a disk can under no circumstances be boosted twice by a Blacksmith (be it the same Blacksmith, or be it seperate Blacksmiths).

Just got an official response on this from Darrell Hardy at FFG. Text follows:

> Basically, the Charger uses the term attacked, but the rules definitions for "attack" and "attacking" seem to conflict for this disk.

If the Charger A to Attack an enemy Disk, that Disk receives a Wound immediately upon being pinned by the Charger. If the Charger Attacks two or more Disks simultaneously, each of the Disks it Attacks receives a wound.

Earl, Ignore my previous ramblings on Plague and Plague Counters. Instead, use the text below.
Darrell Hardy
FFG

Plague Counters represent a number of foul elements that can destroy even the most powerful of creatures. Immediately before the Remove Counters Segment (but after the Combat Segment), a Disk with at least one Plague Counter on it receives one Wound for each Plague Counter on it. If this Wound kills the Disk, both the Disk and the Plague Counter are removed from play. During the Remove Counters Segment, if a Disk has a Plague Counter on it, the controller of that Disk must move the Plague Counter to another Disk within 6". If a Disk has multiple Plague Counters on it, its controller may place them on multiple Disks within 6". If there are no other Disks within 6" remove that Plague Counter from play. If a Disk with a Plague Counter on it is killed before the Remove Counters Segment, its Plague Counter is removed from play. (Note that Disks immune to other Disks' SA may not have a Plague Counter placed on them as the result of another Disk's SA, but may receive a Plague Counter during the Remove Counters Segment as described above.)

Just for your information about the shooting and the targetting (of missiles) I got the official ruling:

> Do we have to choose all the targets at the same time or can we choose  the target only when it is the time for a unit to shoot? It makes a big  difference in strategy.

You choose the target only when it is time to shoot. After that archer
shoots, pick another target with another archer (if you have any).

In a later-resolved combat stack in the same Combat Phase, a Grug kills Tyrnask's Familiar (4 inches away), which lets loose the 6-point Instant Blow on Tyrnask. How many wounds has Tyrnask taken?

Urg. It makes my head hurt. But the end result is that Tyrnask is dead. Hegets (14+4) 18 damage during his combat stack, giving him two wounds and 2 damage left over. The Instant Blow (6) adds to the 2 damage for a total of 8 damage, giving him a third wound, killing him.

> We had the following situation the other night. Firbolg was pinning a
Friendly Fire Wyvern. Firbolg was hit with Fireball. He was then
attacked by a pumped up Zok Slavemaster with a 7 AT. Firbolg took 13 damage and became enslaved. He then attacked the Fire Wyvern and destroyed it. The Fire Wyvern did 3 damage back to Firbolg killing him, because Firbolg had 1 point of Damage carryover from Zok and Fireball. Was this correct?

Yes... near as I can tell. Not sure where the 13 damage came from, as 7 + 4 = 11, but...

> Is the Bishop of Ultaao supposed to be Unique.

Nope.

> Now, let's say that I'm facing Grovan of the Deep, whose text reads "Is never affected by Spells or Missiles." and whose clarification reads
"Grovan may be the target of, and struck by, Spells and Missiles, but it
is immune to Missiles and Spells (I.e., take no damage from missiles and is not affected Spells)."  Now, clearly I can use the Elven Sniper (or
Loritaan Denarra) to place an Arrow counter on Grovan (since he can be the target of or struck by stuff). Are those Arrow counters considered Missiles? They weren't sent over by an Archer, but Grovan's text doesn't say "Immune to missiles from Archers."

Yes, they are considered Missiles.

> A sub-question would be "Are Explosive Elixirs missiles?" but it appears to me that the answer to that question is explicitly "yes" since the Alchemist is an Archer (his disk says "Missile:"). Are disks immune to missiles immune to the Alchemists Elixir?

Yes, they are Missiles. As for whether or not immune Disks are immune to the Elixir's IB(3)... I'll have to get back to you. I want to say that they
aren't, but I should consult the council first.

> What is the Range of the Elven Snipers SA. What is the max range he can place a missile, and the max range he can fire 3 arrows?

12", same as any Arrow.

No.

Nope.

Yeah, that should be listed. I'll add it to the League Guide right now

The order in which the stacks are resolved is determined by first player choosing a stack, then the next, etc. (see page 2.8 in the League Guide for details).

The question was raised earlier about dwarves under Varik influence and magic walls. I had wondered about that and wrote FFG and here was the response.

> How does Varik's ability affect spells or spell effects already in play?
> For example, Sap has been cast on a Dwarf and then Varik comes within range.  Does the effect remain or does it disappear?

The effect remains, as it has already taken effect. Varik's ability is not
retro-active.

> The same question for  Dwarves coming up to a magic wall with Varik with in range. Can they ignore  it or does it still stop them?

The wall stops them.
