Wizardry 7 (1993)/ Wizardry Gold (1995):
I don't want to say that Wizardry 7 is the best Computer Game ever made,
because there might be someone in this big world, who thinks that it isn't.
But it is definitly one of the best!
character creation / proficiencies
today: 95% 1993: 99%
In Wizardry7 you control a group of six characters. You can choose between 10 races and 10
character classes. Each character has 7 attributes and about 30 different proficiencies.
The characters learn how to use their proficiencies during the game. Some of these
proficiences are uncommon in other games.
For example: map writing. There exist an automap function in the game, but the quality
of your maps depends on your map writing proficiency. You can't draw your maps
in the game until you have found your automap kit - that's also a (very realistic)
feature of the game, which doesn't exist in other roleplaying computer games.
Although I'm a big fan of Wizadry 7, I have to admit, that the automap function is
indeed (the only) weakness of this great game. Although the idea of an map writing
proficiency was quite good, the automap of Wizadry7 look quite bad, even after you
have learned this proficiency.
story
today: 99% 1993: 99%
The story is fantastic. It is not strict linear, so you can do whatever you want
to do in the game. (I hate games, in which you have to solve one quest after the other
without the option of doing something else first.) There are numerous quests in
the game, which you don't have to solve, but it's much more fun if you do so.
There are also a lot of riddles - some of them are quite tough, but you can solve
them!
Wizardry7 has a feature that is quite unique for roleplaying games! You are not the
only one, who tries to solve riddles and find treasure - there are other parties
(controled by the computer) who trie to solve the same quests. It's not uncommon
if found a big treasure chest, in wich you found only a little parchment with
the word "We were faster" written on it.
graphics and sound
today: 60% 1993: 90%
Wizardry7 is already some years old, so you shouldn't expect too much, but the
graphics are not so bad, that you would get headaches by looking at them.
You move through a 3-D-world step by step. Unfortunately you can't see
monsters and items from far away. They appear on the screen when you have
reached them.
Sound effects and music are also a little bit old-fashioned, but they are
quite o.k.
