The Blessings of Beauty

The Blessings of Beauty

Why are we moving so fast?
Where are we going?
We look but we do not see
We touch but we do not feel.
There is a balance between doing and being,
And we must satisfy
The hunger pangs of our heart
With what may seem to be
The most illusive of morsels...Beauty.

Today, if we seek out and savor
Some touch of Beauty...
If we prepare it a welcome
with an open heart
And a contemplative mind...
We cannot fail to discover
Hidden and recurring springs of joy
Deep within.

When we pause to watch the golden sun
Fall asleep in the dusk,
We inherit some of its serenity....
When we stop to study wayside baskets of fruit
Their patterns and colors
Become a work of art
and a sudden gladness spills over us...

And when we listen... really listen...
To the whisper of rain
The silence of snowfall,
or to children's laughter
bouncing along a sidewalk,
we feel comfortable with the world
and with our self.

Because beauty never shouts
or makes false promises...
and because it bears no price tag,
we foolishly undervalue its dearness.
What we seek here before us,
if only we pay it heed
and give it time,
it will share with us its grace.

We can no more measure beauty
than measure a sea of sunbeams.
We can no more weigh it
than weigh the shadow of a gull.
We can no more buy it
Than buy the soft smile of spring.
But we know that beauty is real
We can feel it filter through our senses
to waken our finist self.
Nowhere is beauty so bountifully apparent
as in the forms and expressions of nature.

By opening the floodgates of our spirit
We can fly through the night
on the wings of wild geese.
We can rise with the fog
in benediction to the morning sun....
We can slip through valleys
and glide over hills
on the shadow of a single cloud.

Each of Nature's fragments,
No matter how large or small,
No matter how strong or fragile,
Harmonizes with the universal whole
Yet manifests a loveliness of its own.
The exquisite geometry of a snowflake,
The veins of a leaf, the shape of an egg...
sun-glinted icicles and rain kissed ivy
and ribbons of sunlight across a wide lawn.
We are offered so much...
We take so little.

When we befriend the tranquil stars,
We are reassured of a universal constancy
unaffected by the discords and upheavals of man.
And when we chance upon a waterfall
tumbling from the rim of heaven
We see more than water and sky.
We see doors opening,
and we feel a stronger hand
reach out for ours.
There exists an imperishable kinship
between the rugged rushing stream
and the wild flowers that watch it pass...
Between the material caring
of the lioness for her cub
and the doe for her fawn....
Between the soaring pine
and the velvet moss at its feet.
All are cousins to one another
and to each of us.

Without beauty as our guild
we can mistake the art of having,
for the art of living
only to discover that when our shades are drawn
and our lights are out
we lack the richness of inner contact.
without beauty as our friend
We cannot fully develop our capacities
Learning,
Aspiring...
For loving
and being worthy of Love in return.

To stand on a cliff
and borrow strength from the rock,
is to know that we rightfully belong in the universe
as much as the air and water and earth....
to climb a windy hill
and borrow freedom from the breeze
is to feel more ready to face life,
not as a confrontation,
But as an adventure....
And to fling open our arms
to embrace the whole world
is to exult in the awareness
that our days are not for passing through
but for living in.
Beautiful impressions play hide-and-seek
in all that is familiar
and even commonplace around us...
the cheerfulness of red umbrellas in the rain....
the mellowed antiquity of a weathered wall....
a smile that breaks through tears.

The more closely we look
and the more heedfully we listen
the more deeply we care....
the breeze surfing on a field of grain...
The sight and sound and smell of a campfire....
A doll tattered from loving...
a wavelet hushing itself
asleep on the sand.
Why wait to seek beauty
in some other place at some other time?
It is here and now...
in the abstract design of bare-branched trees
etched against a winter dawn...
in a meadowful of fireflies
like errant amber stars
at play in the summer dusk...
in the sight of two kindergartners
walking hand in hand,
each lending courage to the other
in their newly chartered world.

Beauty can be a Robust as a drum roll of thunder
that heralds the long-needed rain.
Beauty can be as gentle as candleglow
on the face of someone in love.
Beauty awaits us in a puppy's boundless joy...
in the glimpse of a choirboy
sneaking the outdoors into church
on his cheeks..
in a strain of music
that moves us to the verge of tears.

Impressions of beauty stored inside
cannot be tarnished or taken away.
They wait for our revisits
whenever and as often as we like.
Beauty reside in the long-ago memory
of a little girl's laughter and hugs...
it exists in the here-and-now vision
of a cluster of clouds
painting their pictures
across the clear blue canvas of heaven...
It lies in the anticipation
that each new rising of the sun
will signal another pure beginning....
another rebirth of hope...
another chance to make a dream come true.

"Trail of no End"© By: Lionel Dougy

Of all the generations born to this earth
since foreverness began
of all the generations yet to be born
until foreverness ends..
we alone,
in this fleeting fragment of time
are alive here and now....
We alone can climb mountains
feel sunshine,
enjoy the companionship of cheerful hearts.
We alone can Speak,
Touch,
Laugh,
Wonder,
Make a wish on the evening star.

For we are the living...
the cresting wave in this whole miraculous flow,
able to sleep a warm sleep.
hear the rustle of leaves,
give one another Love.
If we will but greet each day
as if we had never before wakened to the world,
drawing its preciousness into us
so that we might radiate a portion
to others in return,
could we find a better way
of returning thanks
for the Blessings of Beauty.
