Welcome to Jol's Hieroglyphs.  Here you can learn basic Hieroglyphs.  Most of the information contained within is from various books, movies, etc. that I have studied.  No prior knowledge of hieroglyphs is assumed in order to understand this website.

This site is best viewed with the font called "papyrus."  If you do not have this font, you can download it by clicking here.

It is recommended that you begin with "History" and then from there continue in order to the section titled "Alphabet" then to "Determinatives," to "Logograms" and finally to "Multisyllables" which is broken down into 2 sections entitled "Biliterals" & "Triliterals."*  It is not necessary that you follow this order, but it is strongly recommended that you learn and study each section before moving on to the next.

At the end of each section, you will find a link to "Quiz Me." This section is provided so that you can test your progress.  A link to the answers are located on the bottom of each quiz page where it says "Answers."

Definitions are given in parenthesis and are in this color.  These are words that you should pay special attention to.

On the left of your screen, you will see a picture of The Palette of Narmer, which dates back to around 3000 BC.  This object sets out the deeds of Narmer, the ruler believed to be resposible for the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt.  Click on the picture at any time to return to this page.

* We are currently experiencing difficulties with the Multisyllables section.  Please be patient.  We hope to have it up and running shortly.  Thanks!
