Nikolai Miaskovsky and Prokofiev

Nikolai Miaskovsky was probably the most significant composer of the Soviet era after Prokofiev and Shostakovich. He is known chiefly as a symphonist, having written twenty-seven. Miaskovsky and Prokofiev have always been depicted as close friends, which may seem somewhat surprising, considering how much their personalities seemed to differ. Prokofiev was never described as being introspective or morose in nature, whereas with Miaskovsky, both in his music and in the man himself, introspection seemed predominant.
