A Tribute To Edith M. Faulstich
The Postal History Society of the Americas, Inc.
(Below are historical accounts of its origins, aims and accomplisments and highlight during its very early days).
*********************************************************************************************************************The The Fledgling Years of the Unitied StatesPostal Hitory Society
This first account which follows was written by Edith M. Faulstich.
The Postal History Society, Inc. had its origins in Atlantic City in 1949, when the late Ms. Edith M. Faulstich suggested its fomration at a breakfast meeting. The actual fomration of the PSH of the Americas occurred at the CAPEX exhibition in toronto onte hte 26th of September 1951.
The last three words of the organization were dropped in later years, as explained further below.
The society remained dormant untill 1956, (as further explained belwo also) and started with the issuance of a Postal History
Journal in 1957.
The Society was formed to promote postal history and to act an an umbrella organization for other specialized postal history groups. In its early days the Society had a chapter in New York city and affilitate in New Jersey and the state of New York. The New York Chapter met at the Collectors Club, 22 East 35th Street, NYC on the fourth Monday of each month except July, August and December.
The Society Journal started in 1957 as a single annual and evolved to a three time a year publication with authoritive original postal history articles. The journal had been entered into a number of international exhibitions in the literature section and had always done very well, winning the highest awards given for literature. Awards were given annually by the Society to authors of the best articles published in the Journal.
The Society held an annual convention in connection with a major stamp exhibition in the fall and spring regional meeting. ON two occassions, INTERPEX 1962 and NOJEX 1969, and all Postal History show was held. The program of the Society at its convention was to generally have a speaker on postal history and an award ceremony awarding medals fro the best postal history exhibits, as well as the Edith M. Faulstich Memorial Grand Award for the best postal history exhibit.
The Society took great pride in its contributions to international recognition of postal history as a category in show held under FIP patronage. This step was ccomplished thru the diligent efforts of Dr. William REiner-Deutsch on September 30th 1974. at Stockholmia. Since the founding of the Society, we have promoted postal history at all shows. We made certificates available at any show requesting membership and presenting medals at national shows.
In the early days, the Society was governed by a board of directors, consisting of 12 people, one-third of whom were elected each year for a three year term. the officers were elected from the board and received no compensation for their work or efforts.
Back then, members received three Journals a year. A limited number of back copies were available.
Annual membership dues were:
Regular Member: $7.50
Sustaining Membership: $10.00
Lifetime Membership: $150.00
Associate Societies: NO FEE
The Society offered and opportunity to expand the interst of postal history, to publish research results and to gain recognition for material presented/exhibited.
Information and copies of the PHS Journal ($3.50) were obtai
ned (in the past) by writing to the secretary of the soceity; Edwin J. hanish Box 847,
Wayne, New jersey 07470
The 30th Anniversay of the Postal History Society:
This second accounting of the Postal History Society was written during February of 1981,
by Dr. Wm. Reiner-Deutsch. Dr. WM. Reiner-Deutsch felt ii appropriate to publish and detail the beginnings of the first PHS in the Unitied States, as excerpted (from various portions) from
his perspective.
In 1969, we convinced our Sidney Schneider, that an all postal history show staged at NOJEX with our assistance would be a successful exhibiton hence a worth-while undertaking. He agreed, and we had a very fine show. the next year the board decided to drop the words "of the Americas" subce ut really was causing confusion.
We now refer to the the first and only issue of "Postal History" for a moment. Let me quote a paragraph from the publication: "The name of this organization is the Postal Hisotry Society of the Americas." "Please note the wording,of the Americas. Whether your collecting interests center around some area in South America, Central America, North America, or the many island groups in the hemisphere, we want your specialty represented in this publication. " "So, how about it?"
When the reorganizationof the society was worked on in 1956, a declaration was made to cover the entire world from then on. However due to friendships with Major A. Hokins, the leading figure in the Postal History Society of Great Britan, there was a desire not to quasi-compete with that society.
MERGING WITH THE GLOBAL COVER SOCIETY
An invitational letter follows that reshaped the future of PHS:
To the members of the Global Cover Society-Dated September 26, 1956
As you remeber, our society was fomred to promote the collecting of covers from different postal jurisdictions or stamp issuing authorities. Nearly 250 collectors have show enough interest in this form of collecting to join our society. However, only a small fraction of our membership are actually collecting in this way. the tie we find tht really has drawn our members together is our common interest in different phases of POSTAL HISTORY represented amoung us. Our featured manner of collecting, referred to above, is of course also one of thes phases.
Your directors have seen the need for a Postal History Society in this country--for a large one that will inclued those interested in most of its various phases and write students in various similar fields who may be working in widely sperated locations. A Postal History of the Americas was organized in 1951 but never succeeded in really functioning and has been dormant since 1952. Members of this original group are planning to hold a meeting at the National Philtelic Museum in Phildelphia on October 18 to consider how best to organize postal history collecitons and students. YOur directors are inviting this group to join our SOCIETY.
We are therfore calling a meeting of the Global ocver Society to be held at THE NATIONAL PHILATELIC MUSEUM. Located at Broad at Arch St. (sic), Philadelphia 22 onthursday, October 18th 1956, at 8:00 p.m.
It will be in the nature of a joint meeting witht eh members of teh dormant POSTAL HISTORY SOCIETY OF THE AMERICAS. The date, is the evening preceeding the American Philtelic Congress at the Museum, which we hope will make good attendance possible.
This meeting will discuss:
The merger of the two groups
adoption of a proper name for such an enlarged group, alos proper dues, plans for publications, etc.
Cooperation with the english POSTAL HISTORY SOCIETY
if a merger of the two groups is decided upon, the two committees call this joint meeting will be empowered to appoint a nominating committee which can present a Board of director for the enlarged SOCIETY. The latter will elect officers.
The first Postal History Exhibition will be considered for showing in the MUSEUM early 1957. Classifications will be discussed.
Members of the GLOBAL COVER SOCIETY should write to Bernard Davis at the National Philatelic Mueseum or to any other one of your Coard of Directors advising whether you will attend and how you feel about the main points to be decided-and making any suggestions you may have, especially what the name of the enlarged SOCIETY should be--with its wide postal history intereests.
GLOBAL COVER SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS,
J.C Wheat

Highlights of 1964
During a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Faulstich in 1964, I (DR. WM. REINER_DEUTCH) approached "DEE" Faulstich on whether she would be interested in being nominated to the office of President in 1965. She doubted that my nomination would be of any value since she did not believe that the board would be interested in having a woman in that post. Of course I objected strongly and finally with the help of Fred's persuassion, she accepted the suggestion and became the first woman President of the Postal History Society.
Therefore, for differentiation the old name was retained. In 1967, Major Hopkins passed away. It was later deceided to change the name to the Postal History Society Inc. which automatically differentiates frmo the PHS of Great Britan.

A FEW OTHER PHS HISOTICAL NOTES
dated October 12, 1995. P.O. box 61774, Virginia Beach, Va. 23462. 404-495-1404.
" there is a wonderful letter Edith wrote summarizing all she had done in her three years as President. she was a very dynamic woman, and accomplished a gret deal. I find it most interesting that today I am discussing many of the sam eproblems she mentioned when I hold my board meetings.
there is a history of teh first 30 years fot eh Society whic I reprinted fro our Journal in February 1981. One comments I would like to make about this history from 1981--Will Reiner-Deutch who was extremely active in the Society and author of the article was blessed with a large ego and, I believed downplayed the role of others in bringing the Postal History Society and the class of postal history exhibiting to it current high level.
That is why I included some other material.
In a board meeting in 1973, the board voted to name the Postal History Society Grand Award in Honor of your Grandmother. I have won this award twice and fell very honored. I cite the announcement and inception of the the award.
" In recognition of her untiring efforts for fifteen years on behalf of Postal History in general and the Postal History Society in particular and to perpetuate her memory, the board of Directors have voted to name the PHS annual Grand Award the Edith M. Faulstich Memorial Award. This will be awarded fot the first time at the convention of the Society of NAPEX to be held in Washington DC, September 14-16, 1973, at the Marriott Twin Bridges Motor Hotel."
THE PHS was granted a Non-Profit Status in 1981 by the IRS, as a result of
Diane D. Boehert 's efforts. She became the second woman President of the PHS in 1989 and currently still served in that capcity as of 1995, and still does as far as I know at the release of this website. Please do give her a call as I hear she knows EVERYONE!
