Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 100 Minutes

Set List:

Wasted Words, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out, Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Southbound, Jessica, Ramblin' Man, Whipping Post

Comments: An excellent show with the newly added Lamar Williams on bass and Chuck Leavell on piano. The overall effect is jazzier than before but it sounds great as usual! Wasted Words is an excellent opener and almost the entire new album is played here, with Dickey's new songs standing out. A really good show.

Live at the Cow Palace, San Francisco, California, December 31, 1973/January 1, 1974

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 5 Hours

Set List:

Wasted Words, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Midnight Rider, Blue Sky, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Statesboro Blues, Southbound, Come and Go Blues, Ramblin' Man, Trouble No More, Jessica, Les Bres in A Minor/Whipping Post, Linda Lou, Hideaway, You Upset Me, Bo Diddley, Mountain Jam, Bo Diddley, Save My Life, You Don't Love Me, Mountain Jam

Comments: No, the time is not a typo...this was a marathon show to celebrate the New Year. The first half up through Les Bres in A Minor is great, with the band ripping through the set and the new songs sounding really good, although there are some sloppy parts where they don't all come in together on some riffs or unison lines. From Linda Lou to the end, Bill Kreutzmann, Jerry Garcia and Boz Scaggs join them. Garcia's guitar work is wimpy and pathetic and his hippy-trippy sound is blown away by the virtuosity and power of Betts' solos, especially on a tour de force such as Save My Life through the end. VERY long but very cool show. Solid playing. Of course it doesn't compare to the Berry and Duane era, but still solid playing from the band and a nice listen.
