Comments: This is the first volume in the bootleg release of all but 40 tracks recorded by The Beatles and for the most part sounds great! The first two dates are when Pete Best was still with them and the drumming is noticeably stiff but by the time Ringo joined, the sound has improved greatly. The old rock and roll numbers sound great, and the sound being quite good for 35+ year old recordings helps add to this special feel. Paul's bass in particular seems way ahead of any other at the time and the dual guitar parts add a great touch. Tight vocal harmonies never hurt either. This is a great start to this series of recordings!

Set List:
6/4/63: Pop Go The Beatles, Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby, Do You Want to Know a Secret, You Really Got a Hold On Me, Misery, Hippy Hippy Shake, Pop Go The Beatles 6/11/63: Too Much Monkey Business, I Got to Find My Baby, Youngblood, Baby It's You, Till There Was You, Love Me Do 6/18/63: A Shot of Rhythm and Blues, Memphis,Tennesee, A Taste of Honey, Sure to Fall (In Love With You), Money (That's What I Want), From Me to You 6/23/63: Some Other Guy, A Taste of Honey, Thank You Girl, From Me to You 6/24/63: Too Much Monkey Business, Boys, I'll Be On My Way, From Me to You 6/25/63: Anna (Go to Him), I Saw Her Standing There, Boys, Chains, P.S. I Love You, Twist and Shout
Comments: The sound is really great and the performances are really energetic and spirited, especially the covers. George in particular manages to create a different and exciting solo in different takes of the same song, and Ringo and Paul are a very solid, swinging rhythm section. The vocals are great as always and the more obscure original material sounds good in a live setting.

Comments: The performances are very good, especially a great version of Soldier of Love and a rocking Sweet Little Sixteen! The originals sound good too, and this is valuable as a snippet of this material live when it could still be heard and wasn't being drowned out by screaming fans.

My Soul, Don't Ever Change, Twist and Shout, Anna (Go To Him), A Shot of Rhythm and Blues
Comments: Some more excellent and rare cover versions. This also must be one of the earliest versions of She Loves You ever played to the public. The playing is as good as always although there are some disturbing letters sent in from fans, including a bomb threat to John if he doesn't sing a song the fan wanted! There are a lot of songs done here that would show up on albums between mid 1963 and the end of 1964 and also a lot of great, energetic material that gave an idea of their pre-Beatlemania stage act.

Comments: More great and energetic shows with some humorous comments from The Beatles between songs. There are some really great songs here and it's interesting to hear how George never plays a guitar solo the same twice, making each version of a song unique.

Comments: 1964 is a new phase and The Beatles sound has really matured. There are some rarities, like the live versions of many of the songs form the newly released A Hard Day's Night album, and as always the between numbers chat is funny and illuminating on the practices of recording the radio shows back then.

Comments: This volume includes the final show Th Beatles ever did, and also shows promoting Beatles For Sale. Some of the songs from that album are played live here and wouldn't be on tours, and the final show from 1965 includes some great versions of songs from Help! This whole series is incredibly historic and essential to any collector.

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down, I Saw Her Standing There, Roll Over Beethoven, Hippy Hippy Shake, Sweet Little Sixteen, Lend Me Your Comb, Your Feets Too Big, Twist and Shout, Mr. Moonlight, A Taste of Honey, Besame Mucho, Reminiscing, Kansas City/Hey! Comments: The Beatles live! They already had records out and were getting big in the UK, but there was a contract to fulfill at this club, and the last show was recorded. Very good sound, especially considering it was 1962! The playing here is very tight and energetic, fast and frenzied. Great selection of songs, which are almost all covers. Although derided by the group now, these are immensely important as historical documents and a joy to listen to!

Comments: This is the entire rooftop show and it is a very enjoyable one. The Beatles seem to be having fun playing and it show. The comments between songs are hilarious, too. Essential.
