Blur: Live 1991:
Live at Essex University Dancehall, Essex University, Colchester, England, April 27, 1991
Sound: Good to very good audience
Time: Approx. 1 Hour
Set List:
I Know, Won't Do It, High Cool, Mr. Briggs, Wear Me Down, Bad Day, Inertia, Slow Down, I'm All Over, She's So High, There's No Other Way, Day Upon Day, Explain, Come Together
Comments: A very early live Blur show on their home turf of Colchester. The sound is very good although a little wobbly, but it's really great to hear all my favorite Leisure and 1991-era b-sides played live. They are stripped down and great, especially High Cool and Wear Me Down. Bad Day and Mr. Briggs are great to hear too....excellent songs. A very punk inspired show, with Dave drumming like a maniac throughout. Historical importance overrules the sound, although it's very listenable and not bad at all.
Live at Cologne, Germany, August 21, 1991
Sound: Good to very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Bang, High Cool, Oily Water, Turn It Up, Wear Me Down, Mr. Briggs, Slow Down, Come Together, Commercial Break
Comments: A high-energy show that opens with a heavy Bang and goes into the funky and sparser than Leisure High Cool, which is a favorite of mine. VERY early and great versions of Oily Water and the rarely-if-ever-played Turn It Up follow, and a beautiful and excellent version of Mr. Briggs, one of Blur's best songs ever, comes after. The last 3 songs are powerful and end in a feedback frenzy from Graham, and Damon spends a good part of the show antagonizing the crowd, who can't understand him, when Alex's bass blows up before Slow Down. Another great and rare early show!
Live at The Metro, Chicago, Illinois, November 10, 1991
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Popscene, Fool, High Cool, Bad Day, Oily Water, Bang, Slow Down, Turn It Up, She's So High, Wear Me Down, There's No Other Way
Comments: This show was recorded for broadcast on a local radio station, and is an excellent document of early Blur. Popscene is played and this must be one of its first times live. Alex's bass is so heavy and he and Dave are really powerful this entire show. Most of Leisure is played live, with some future songs from MLIR being aired, such as a great version of Oily Water. A very good early-era show.
