Set List:
Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Foxey Lady, Red House, Sunshine of Your Love, I Don't Live Today, Third Stone From the Sun, Hear My Train A Comin', Spanish Castle Magic, Purple Haze, Star Spangled Banner
Comments: A good show, although Jimi seems to be a little out of it at the beginning. He certainly warms up for incendiary renditions of Re House and Hear My Train A Comin', while Noel and Mitch just smoke their way through this set with some blistering playing. Spanish Castle magic in particular has an excellent drum solo from Mitch and excellent improvisations throughout.

Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Killing Floor, Spanish Castle Magic, Fire, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Red House, Sunshine of Your Love
Comments: A great show!! There is a free form, jamming atmosphere that the band adopts and it sounds great. They are all on top form, with Mitch playing some incredible drums, Noel playing inventive "lead" bass, and Jimi playing as if his guitar were a part of him. The excellent sound helps this great gig come out clearly and LOUD. Spanish Castle Magic, in particular, has some incredible guitar playing.

Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
I Don't Live Today, Spanish Castle Magic, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Sunshine of Your Love, Red House, Fire, Purple Haze, Star Spangled Banner
Comments: Another killer show!! These were warm-ups for the forthcoming tour and the band just lest loose and jams al night! I Don't Live Today is charged with an incredible amount of energy and Voodoo Child and Red House feature incredible soloing.....so does the whole show! Mitch and Noel are incredible throughout...this and the first show are essential!!

Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 75 Minutes
Set List:
Come On (Let the Good Times Roll), Fire, Red House, I Don't Live Today, Reveille, Little Wing, Foxey Lady, Sunshine of Your Love, Hey Joe, Purple Haze
Comments: This is a great, jam oriented (as Jimi stated at the beginning) show with some great playing. Come On has some amazing guitar playing before the song begins proper, and I Don't Live Today is a great long version. Little Wing is gorgeous and has a great solo from Jimi and the whole band powers through Sunshine. Great show.
Live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England, February 24, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 110 Minutes
Set List:
Lover Man, Stone Free, Hear My Train A Comin', I Don't Live Today, Red House, Foxey Lady, Sunshine of Your Love, Bleeding Heart, Fire, Little Wing, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Room Full of Mirrors, Purple Haze, Wild Thing, Smashing of the Amps
Soundcheck: Hey Joe, Hound Dog, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Hear My Train A Comin'
Comments: This INCREDIBLE, legendary show is a great document of the original Experience at the height of their on-stage prowess. Includes one of the handful of times they ever performed Little Wing live. Stone Free and Voodoo Child are long, great jams with the whole band playing out of this world. There is a humorous atmosphere at the show and the band rises to the occasion in this electrifying set. The Room Full of Mirrors features Rocky Dijon on congas and Chris Wood on flute. Also includes a soundcheck from before the show.
Live at the Forum, Inglewood, California, April 26, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Tax Free, Foxey Lady, Red House, Spanish Castle magic, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, I Don't Live Today, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Sunshine of Your Love
Comments: A killer show from the band as they appease a crowd that seems to be wild. Noel and Jimi constantly tell them to sit down! The playing here is spectacular, with Jimi in full flight and Noel and Mitch flexing their chops behind in some great jams. Tax Free is a monster and Spanish castle Magic has an amazing unaccompanied Hendrix solo section. All in all, this show is a great gig. And the comments to the crowd are funny but emphasize how serious the situation could have been.
Live at the Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California, April 27, 1969
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Fire, Hey Joe, Spanish Castle Magic, Hear My Train A Comin', Sunshine of Your Love, Red House, Foxey Lady, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Comments: This is a great show! The band is in top form and delivers a great show. Jimi plays an unaccompanied solo during Spanish Castle Magic that is breathtaking and then rest of the show is timeless Experience, with a 20 minute Voodoo Child bringing down the set and the house!! This is one great show!
Live at Maple Leaf Garden, Toronto, Canada, May 3, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Fire, Hear My Train A Comin', Spanish Castle Magic, Third Stone From the Sun, Little Miss Lover, Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, Foxey Lady, Room Full of Mirrors/Crash Landing/Midnight Lightning/Gypsy Eyes, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Comments: A really great, inspired show with some really excellent and obscure album tracks being played, such as Little Miss Lover (one of my favorites!). Jimi is smoking and the whole band delivers an amazing performance. This was the same day Jimi was set up on a drug bust. He was busted after the show but it turned out to be a set up and the charges were dropped. Killer show!
Live at Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, May 17, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 75 Minutes
Set List:
Lover Man, I Don't Live Today, Red House, Hear My Train A Comin', Spanish Castle Magic, Sunshine of Your Love, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze, Star Spangled Banner, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Comments: An excellent show. Lover Man and the brutal I Don't Live Today start the show with a bang, and Jimi plays the most awesome guitar solo during Red House! The Spanish Castle Magic jam is great and a savage version of Voodoo Child (Slight Return) with some nice start-stop improvisations ends this explosive show.
Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, May 18, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Lover Man, Come On (Let the Good Times Roll), Red House, Fire, Spanish Castle Magic, Villanova Junction, Spanish Castle Magic, I Don't Live Today, Hear My Train A Comin', Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Purple Haze
Comments: A really energetic and great set. The band jam out on almost every song and one of my favorite songs, and a rarely played one (Come On) is played with a vengeance. Red House smokes, as always, and the long jam numbers, like I Don't Live Today and Spanish Castle Magic have some truly great improvisations.
Live at International Sports Arena, San Diego, California, May 24, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Fire, Hey Joe, Spanish Castle Magic, Sunshine of Your Love, Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, I Don't Live Today, Star Spangled Banner, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Comments: A killer show! They insert Sunshine of Your Love in the middle of Spanish Castle Magic as a surprise and Jimi explains after "That's what happens when you get tired of playing the same ol' song!" A blistering version of Red House brings the house down and Mitch and Noel offer some especially good improvisations behind Jimi, most notably on Spanish Castle Magic and Voodoo Child (Slight Return). The Experience wouldn't last the summer, breaking up at the very end of June. This then is a final-era concert from them, and a testament to what an explosive group they were on stage.
Live at San Jose Pop Festival, Santa Clara, California, May 25, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 80 Minutes
Set List:
Hear My Train A Comin', Fire, Drum Solo, Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, I Don't Live Today, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Message to Love, Room Full of Mirrors, Sunshine of Your Love
Comments: This is a fiery show based almost solely on improvising....Fire only has one verse! The playing is great though, and Red House has some of the most blistering guitar from Jimi. Voodoo Child and the 3 songs after it are actually one huge jam on Voodoo Child, with an embryonic version of Message to Love showing up, as well as two lines from Room Full of Mirrors and a few verses of Sunshine. Savage playing, good show, and one of the last Experience shows with the original lineup.
Live at Devonshire Downs, California, June 20, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Stone Free, Are You Experienced?, Stone Free, Sunshine of Your Love, Fire, Hear My Train A Comin', Red House, Foxey Lady, Like a Rolling Stone, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Purple Haze
Comments: One of the last gigs by the original Experience, this is a great show. The sound is really raw and crisp, and Jimi has a particularly nasty tone to his guitar that makes it howl and shriek....it sounds great. He and Noel yell at the crowd and chastise them for being lackluster and quiet during the songs and for talking when they try to talk. Jimi gets mad, and delivers savage playing throughout the set, almost as if he is yelling at the crowd with his savage treatment of the songs. Noel and Mitch jam out and solo throughout too, and this intense atmosphere makes this gig electrifying. Jimi wasn't pleased with this show but I think it is heavy, savage and biting....a great show, in my opinion!
Live at Devonshire Downs, California, June 22, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 1 Hour
Set List:
Earth vs. Space, Gypsy Eyes, Red House, Machine Gun, Things That I Used To Do, Train Kept A Rollin', Earth Blues, Hear My Train A Comin', Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Let the Good Times Roll, We Gotta Live Together, I Feel So Good
Comments: This is basically Jimi on stage jamming with the Buddy Miles Express....except for Buddy's always painful and downright obnoxious singing, this is a great tape. The band is great in the jams and Jimi takes control, leading them through improvised snippets and songs form his catalog and his playing is scorching. Check out the first sequence of songs for some blistering playing, and the jams are unreal. Wild harmonica and saxophone accompany Jimi's forays into space with his guitar blazing. This is smoking!
Live at Denver Pop Festival, Mile High Stadium, Denver, Colorado, June 29, 1969
Sound: Good audience
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Tax Free, Hear My Train A Comin', Fire, Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, Foxey Lady, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze
Comments: This is the last show played by the original Experience. A pretty good show...not tops by Jimi's standards but a good show nonetheless. Really great playing and feedback soloing on Tax Free and Spanish Castle Magic, and the group drops out to let him solo alone in the latter, and it is pretty amazing. All in all an above average set for the band but not quite reaching the fever pitch of shows past. Still very good.
Live at Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York, August 18, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Hear My Train A Comin', Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, Mastermind, Lover Man, Foxey Lady, Beginnings, Izabella, Gypsy Woman, Fire, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Stepping Stone, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, Villanova Junction, Hey Joe
Comments: A great set from Jimi, Mitch and Billy. The percussionists add nicely to the sound but the second guitar player drives me nuts! He plays such busy rhythm guitar that it sometimes obscures Jimi and when he solos in one song, it is excruciatingly painful. Other than that, and two songs that are not sung by Jimi (or written by him) which feature good playing but pretty poor singing, this is a good set but merely average by Jimi's usual standards. The sounds he gets from his guitar, though, especially on Izabella and Hear My Train A Comin' are pretty awesome.
Record Plant Studios, New York City, New York, October 29, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 20 Minutes
Tracks:
Machine Gun, Stepping Stone, Izabella
Comments: First of all these have GREAT sound! And the performances really cook. Machine Gun turns into a great jam, Stepping Stone rocks hard like it did in its final finished version and Izabella....well we all know how great a song that is anyway! This lineup of the Experience is the only one that can compete with the original one of Redding and Mitchell. Cox and Mitchell rock!
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, December 31, 1969 (Soundcheck)
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 20 Minutes
Set List:
Message to Love, Ezy Rider, Power of Soul, Changes, Hootchie Kootchie Man
Comments: These are amazing versions. Hendrix's playing is simply unbelievable, from rhythm to soloing and fluid runs and fills...simply amazing, and crystal clear sound as well!
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, December 31, 1969 (1st Show)
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Power of Soul, Lover Man, Hear My Train A Comin', Them Changes, Izabella, Machine Gun, Stop, Ezy Rider, Bleeding Heart, Earth Blues, Burning Desire
Comments: This was the first show from the Band of Gypsies stand on New Years Eve and it is indeed an excellent show, with some amazing guitar from Jimi and some great bass from Billy. Buddy's vocals are awful as always but the drumming is very good. Burning Desire, Machine Gun, and nearly every other song have great jamming and Jimi just flies. Check out the other three shows for a complete event...4 shows with Jimi into the New Year! (The 3rd and 4th shows are in January 1970).
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, December 31, 1969 (2nd Show)
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
New Year's Song, Who Knows, Stepping Stone, Burning Desire, Fire, Ezy Rider, Machine Gun, Power of Soul, Stone Free/Sunshine of Your Love, Them Changes, Message to Love, Stop, Foxey Lady, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Purple Haze
Comments: An excellent show that begins right at midnight! The playing is superb, and a greatly extended Foxey Lady has some amazing soloing from Jimi. Burning Desire again emerges as a powerful rocker, as do Ezy Rider and Power of Soul. The new material sounds great interspersed with the older, more established songs. This is another excellent show from Jimi in this band configuration.
