R.E.M.:Live 1987:

Document Demos

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 45 Minutes

Tracks:

Finest Worksong, Welcome to the Occupation, Exhuming McCarthy, Disturbance at the Heron House, Pop Song 89, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Orange Crush, Fireplace, Lightnin' Hopkins, I Remember California, Oddfellows Local 151

Comments: These are excellent sounding full band demos for the Document material. These would make a great album in their own right, as they are slightly different but also close to being finished. There are even three that were done live for the Work tour that ended up on Green in 1988. Great, crisp sound on these ones!

Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, England, September 12, 1987

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Finest Working, These Days, Welcome to the Occupation, Driver 8, Orange Crush, The One I Love, Feeling Gravitys Pull, Begin the Begin, Exhuming McCarthy, Wipeout, Title, Wolves,Lower, Superman, Just a Touch, Oddfellows Local 151, Lightnin' Hopkins, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Strange, Life and How to Live It, I Believe (w/Robyn Hitchcock), Disturbance at the Heron House (w/Robyn Hitchcock), Fall On Me, Harpers, Funtime, Radio Free Europe

Comments: The band's first show of 1987, and a very good show, although some of the encores suffer from tuning problems. Also, as in most 1987 shows, there isn't quite as much contrast between quieter and louder songs.....they're all pretty loud and heavy! That being said, it's still one of my favorite live years for them and this show has lots of good things. Bill's drumming is powerful and louder and the new material sounds great on stage. Wipeout is a very spontaneous performance and Funtime and Radio Free Europe rock hard to end the show.

Live at Muziekcentrum, Utrecht, The Netherlands, September 14, 1987

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Finest Worksong, These Days, Lightnin' Hopkins, Welcome to the Occupation, Driver 8, Feeling Gravitys Pull, I Believe, The One I Love, Exhuming McCarthy, Wolves,Lower, Fall On Me, Superman, Just a Touch, Oddfellows Local 151, Little America, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, Strange, Disturbance At the Heron House, Funtime, Moral Kiosk, Life and How to Live It, Time After Time (AnnElise), Red Rain, So. Central Rain

Comments: An excellent sounding soundboard recording of an excellent and very powerful concert from the Work tour. The Document album is a personal favorite of mine and its songs translate very well live, especially the blistering version of The One I Love and an intense Welcome to the Occupation. The older songs sound great as well, especially Wolves,Lower and Begin the Begin. The final song is an awesome guitar and vocals only version of So. Central Rain. One of my favorite shows!

Live at Little John Coliseum, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, October 2, 1987

Sound: Good to very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Finest Worksong, These Days, West of the Fields, Exhuming McCarthy, Wolves,Lower, Orange Crush, The One I Love, Feeling Gravitys Pull, Driver 8, Title, King of Birds, Fireplace, I Believe, Superman, Oddfellows Local 151, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, Strange, Fall On Me, Disturbance at the Heron House, Little America, Welcome to the Occupation, Midnight Blue, Just a Touch, Harpers, Ain't No Sunshine, Life and How to Live It

Comments: Another great early Work tour show. Very nice to see West of the Fields played, and early in the set! Same with Wolves,Lower. Orange Crush is greeted initially with indifference, but by the end, the response is rapturous. Title is an unreleased song that sounds great alongside all of the other Document songs....shame they didn't do more with it. Fireplace was rarely, if ever played live, and here we get a nice run through. Great show all around.

Live at The Spectrum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October 16, 1987

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Finest Worksong, These Days, Welcome to the Occupation, Pilgrimage, Disturbance At the Heron House, Exhuming McCarthy, Orange Crush, Feeling Gravitys Pull, King of Birds, Tired of Singing Trouble, I Believe, Oddfellows Local 151, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, Strange, Fall On Me, Crazy, 1,000,000, John the Revelator (w/Natalie Merchant), The One I Love, Midnight Blue, Addicted to Love, Radio Free Europe, Harpers, So. Central Rain, Wolves,Lower

Comments: This is a good, hard rockin' Work Tour show. The Document songs sound great, although Michael and the band really botch up Feeling Gravitys Pull. There are some nice surprises, like Pilgrimage, Crazy, and Wolves,Lower, not to mention the rarely played 1,000,000. Orange Crush was a new song that sounds good live even before its release on Green in 1988.

Live at Eliot Hall, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, October 27, 1987

Sound: Good to very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Finest Worksong, These Days, Sitting Still, Welcome to the Occupation, Disturbance at the Heron House, Exhuming McCarthy, Orange Crush, Feeling Gravitys Pull, King of Birds, White Tornado, I Believe, Title, Cuyahoga, Pretty Persuasion, Time of the Season, Superman, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, The Flowers of Guatemala, Fall On Me, Swan Swan H, Pop Song 89, The One I Love, Harpers, Crazy, So. Central Rain

Comments: A very good and solid show. The band plays each song with power and vigor and the set has hardly any soft or quiet moments. Michael indulges in some joking with the crowd but the band as a whole is very tight and reserved. Great versions of Title, Orange Crush and a killer Begin the Begin. The new Document material sounds great too, starting with the blistering Finest Worksong.

Live at Fox Theatre, St. Louis, Missouri, November 10, 1987

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Finest Worksong, These Days, West of the Fields, Fall On Me, Disturbance at the Heron House, Exhuming McCarthy, Orange Crush, Feeling Gravitys Pull, The Flowers of Guatemala, Cuyahoga, I Believe, Maps and Legends, Superman, Auctioneer (Another Engine), Oddfellows Local 151, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, Strange, Wolves,Lower, King of Birds, See No Evil, Midnight Blue, Ghost Rider

Comments: This is a good show with some nice surprises from past tours and albums. West of the Fields makes a welcome appearance so early on, and The Flowers of Guatemala, a rarity on Pageantry, is a welcome addition here as well. A really great version of Orange Crush is played, and there is a great segue from the end of It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) into Begin the Begin. Good show.

Live at Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, California, November 15, 1987

Sound: Very good, but distant audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Finest Worksong, Welcome to the Occupation, Pilgrimage, Disturbance at the Heron House, Exhuming McCarthy, Orange Crush, Feeling Gravitys Pull, King of Birds, I Believe, Sitting Still, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Pretty Persuasion, Superman, Oddfellows Local 151, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Begin the Begin, 1,000,000, Wolves,Lower, See No Evil, Pop Song 89, Ghost Rider, Cuyahoga, Crazy

Comments: A very good and powerful show. Pilgrimage is a very nice addition early on in the set, and the newer material really comes off well live. Disturbance at the Heron House is wonderful. There are a lot of great cover versions that really rock hard, such as the two ghost-rider related songs and See No Evil. A downright haunting version of Crazy closes the show, and a metalesque version of Oddfellows Local 151 showcases the band's instrumental prowess.
