Comments: This is a very good show with some great rarely played gems that haven't been done for years! The sound is very good, although a little echoey, like the following night. Earl's Court is built like an airplane hangar so that's to be expected. The band really plows through Driver 8 and Lotus, and the newer material is excellent. Michael's solo spot on I'm Not Over You is very touching. Great show.
Live at Earl's Court Arena, London, England, June 23, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, So Fast,So Numb, Suspicion, The Apologist, Sitting Still, Daysleeper, Wake-Up Bomb, How the West Was Won and Where it Got Us, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, At My Most Beautiful, Losing My Religion, The Great Beyond, Everybody Hurts, Country Feedback, Star 69, Walk Unafraid, Finest Worksong, Suspicious Minds, man On the Moon, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Parakeet, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This show has a very special place in my heart....it was the first ever R.E.M. show I ever saw and it blew me away, it was fantastic! It's just as great on tape. Sitting Still was a huge surprise and it sounds great, and the songs from Up come across really well, especially Suspicion. Nice to see some rarities from Hi-Fi as well, and The Great Beyond is so good. Cuyahoga makes a nice appearance in the encores. This is a great show!
Live at Festhalle, Frankfurt, Germany, June 27, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, Wake-Up Bomb, Crush With Eyeliner, Pop Song 89, Pilgrimage, Suspicion, Fall On Me, The Apologist, Low Desert, Sweetness Follows, The One I Love, Electrolite, Daysleeper, Find the River, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion, At My Most Beautiful, Walk Unafraid, Star 69, Suspicious Minds, Man On the Moon, Suspicious Minds, I'm Not Over You, Why Not Smile, So. Central Rain, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Tongue, Country Feedback, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: Another excellent show in front of an enthusiastic crowd. There are only 2 new songs in the first 45 minutes of the show, and what a great selection! The set has a great mix of old and new and is paced well; in fact it might be one of the best sets from the whole tour. The encores start off with a very sweet Michael alone before the band comes out, and the encore section is long and a GREAT Country Feedback leads into a killer End of the World. The sound is very good for a venue this size, much better than Earl's Court sound.
Live at Maschee, Hannover, Germany, June 29, 1999
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, So. Central Rain, Suspicion, Fall On Me, The Apologist, Low Desert, Daysleeper, Wake-Up Bomb, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, Losing My Religion, Cuyahoga, The Great Beyond, Find the River, Everybody Hurts, Walk Unafraid, At My Most Beautiful, Life and How to Live It, Finest Worksong, Man On the Moon, I'm Not Over You, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Pop Song 89, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This is an excellent show and has really great sound. Nice to see So. Central Rain and Fall On Me so early on, and Low Desert is a definite highlight of this all around great show. One of the most emotional versions of Everybody Hurts I have ever heard, and the quieter songs are exquisite, like Find the River, Why Not Smile and Daysleeper.
Live at Wuhlheide, Berlin, Germany, June 30, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, Wake-Up Bomb, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Suspicion, Pilgrimage, Daysleeper, So Fast,So Numb, The Apologist, Electrolite, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, At My Most Beautiful, Losing My Religion, The Great Beyond, Find the River, Sitting Still, Everybody Hurts, Walk Unafraid, Pop Song 89, Finest Worksong, Man On the Moon, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This show is unusual, as there are fewer acoustic based songs than on most shows, and none at all in the encore section! The playing is excellent though, and very nice to see two songs from Murmur appear in the setlist! This is one of the more visceral shows from the European leg and a great one! Cuyahoga is one of my favorite versions.
Live at Roskilde Festival, Roskilde, Denmark, July 2, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, Wake-Up Bomb, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Daysleeper, The Apologist, Fall On Me, Electrolite, Sweetness Follows, The One I Love, The Great Beyond, At My Most Beautiful, Losing My Religion, Find the River, Everybody Hurts, Walk Unafraid, Finest Worksong, Man On the Moon, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This show is slightly shorter and structured different due to it being a festival show, but it's a great one! Lotus, as always, is a great opener and the sequencing of songs is great.....I love the middle, from The One I Love through Man On the Moon. The song selection and playing are just great. A shorter encore set than usual, but understandable.
Live at Bercy, Paris. France, July 5, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Wake-Up Bomb, Daysleeper, New Test Leper, Suspicion, Fall On Me, The Apologist, Sweetness Follows, The One I Love, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion, Country Feedback, At My Most Beautiful, Pop Song 89, Begin the Begin, Star 69, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Black Boys on Mopeds, I'm Not Over You, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, E-Bow the Letter, Tongue, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This show has great sound and is a really good show, as all are from this tour! The inclusion of New Test Leper after Daysleeper is great, and Country Feedback is chilling. Pop Song 89 is followed by a great version of Begin the Begin, which I don't think had been played in a long time! The encores are great, especially a great version of E-Bow. Michael also mentions it's the first time the band ever played on the same bill with Patti Smith. Very cool!
Live at Stravinski Auditorium, Montreaux, Switzerland, July 6, 1999
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Suspicion, Pilgrimage, So Fast,So Numb, Perfect Circle, Daysleeper, Fall On Me, Electrolite, The Apologist, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, At My Most Beautiful, The Great Beyond, Losing my Religion, Find the River, Everybody Hurts, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Black Boys On Mopeds, I'm Not Over You, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This was a show performed in a small auditorium of about 800 people. The intimate atmosphere really comes across, and couple with the great sound, this is a great show. Lotus is powerful and there are some really nice surprises, such as Pilgrimage, Perfect Circle, which is truly gorgeous, and an incredible version of The Great Beyond. The encore section is good as well, with Cuyahoga sounding very good and working well as a contrast after Tongue and before the blow out of End of the World as the closer.
Live at Horse Riding Stadium, Munich, Germany, July 13, 1999
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, Wake-Up Bomb, Begin the Begin, Fall On Me, Suspicion, Half a World Away, The Apologist, Life and How to Live It, Electrolite, Daysleeper, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, The One I Love, Find the River, At My Most Beautiful, Finest Worksong, Pretty Persuasion, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Losing My Religion, Hope, I'm Not Over You, Why Not Smile, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Tongue, So. Central Rain, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This show has exceptional sound and Lotus is an explosive opener. We are treated with Mike's great bass playing being high up in the mix. This is a great setlist, and Half a World Away brought an instant smile to my face when I heard it. The Great Beyond sounds excellent and they add a twist to the set by ending with Losing My Religion instead of Man On the Moon or Walk Unafraid. The encores are great, including So. Central Rain followed by Cuyahoga. Lots of great older songs too....Pretty Persuasion, Life and How to Live It and Begin the Begin, are mixed in with great versions of Suspicion and Daysleeper and The Apologist.
Live at Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California, August 9, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Wake-Up Bomb, Suspicion, Fall On Me, E-Bow the Letter, Low Desert, Everybody Hurts, Daysleeper, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion, Find the River, At My Most Beautiful, Finest Worksong, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Falls to Climb, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Cuyahoga, Suspicious Minds, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), Suspicious Minds, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This was the first show of the American leg of the tour. The playing is really good, although stupid audience comments and singing on the tape make it annoying. Very nice to see E-Bow followed directly by Low Desert, and The Great Beyond, as always, sounds great. Michael tells a really funny anecdote in the middle of Falls to Climb, and the encore section itself is long and entertaining, and the playing is good. I wish the sound were a little better, although it's still very good. Could use less audience comments, more music!
Live at Irvine Meadows, Irvine, California, August 11, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, So Fast,So Numb, Suspicion, Stand, How the West Was Won and Where it Got Us, Low Desert, Daysleeper, The Apologist, The One I Love, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion, Find the River, At My Most Beautiful, Pop Song 89, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Hope, Why Not Smile, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, So. Central Rain, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: This was the first show of the US leg of the tour, and the first time Stand is played in America since 1989! The show is excellent, although the recording is sometimes annoying thanks to stupid comments and lots of whistling and such. Pop Song 89 is particularly good and Walk Unafraid is excellent. Nice encore section too.
Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver, Colorado, August 15, 1999
Sound: Very good audience (with drop-outs and recorder faults near end, NOT my fault at all)
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Wake-Up Bomb, Fall On Me, Suspicion, Jesus, New Test Leper, The One I Love, Daysleeper, Electrolite, The Apologist, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion, E-Bow the Letter, At My Most Beautiful, Finest Worksong, Walk Unafraid, Man On the Moon, Hope, Why Not Smile, Live For Today, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Gardening at Night, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: A very good show taped by a good personal friend of mine. There are some drop-outs near the end, from him jumping during the show (he tells me!), but the sound is great and so is the show. The Great Beyond is beautiful as always and rocks hard, and although some is missing, E-Bow the Letter is great. Daysleeper is pretty and The One I Love comes up earlier in the set as usual. After a great version of Gardening at Night, a manic It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) closes out the set. Very good show!
Live at Chastain Amphitheatre, Atlanta, Georgia, August 29, 1999
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Wake-Up Bomb, Pilgrimage, Suspicion, Electrolite, Everybody Hurts, Daysleeper, The Apologist, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, The One I Love, Find the River, At My Most Beautiful, Finest Worksong, Losing My Religion, Man On the Moon, Walk Unafraid, Hope, Nightswimming, Crush With Eyeliner, Tongue, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: The first night back on their home turf in Georgia. The band puts on a really good show. Pilgrimage was a surprise so early on in the set and Everybody Hurts is beautiful (I saw it live in London 6/23/99). After Find the River, Bill Berry comes onstage to cheers from the crowd. They dedicate the next song to him. Too bad he didn't play...I wish he'd rejoin but I respect his decision. Finest Worksong rocks and this is the tour debut of Nightswimming. A very nice show.
Live at Chastain Amphitheatre, Atlanta, Georgia, August 30, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, Wake-Up Bomb, So Fast,So Numb, Fall On Me, Suspicion, How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us, Stand, Daysleeper, The Apologist, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, The One I Love, E-Bow the Letter, At My Most Beautiful, Pop Song 89, Losing My Religion, Man On the Moon, Walk Unafraid, Falls to Climb, Hope, Why Not Smile, Nightswimming, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Tongue, Wolves,Lower, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: The second night in Atlanta and a very fast paced show with a pretty wild crowd. There are quite a few treats in this show, including How the West Was Won, Stand, E-Bow the Letter, and Wolves,Lower. The playing is really manic towards the end. There is nary a pause between the last two songs. A very good second night back home.
Live at Chastain Amphitheatre, Atlanta, Georgia, August 31, 1999
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, So Fast,So Numb, Camera, Fall On Me, Suspicion, Jesus, New Test Leper, The One I Love, Daysleeper, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, Begin the Begin, Country Feedback, At My Most Beautiful, Star 69, Losing My Religion, Man On the Moon, Walk Unafraid, Hope, Why Not Smile, Nightswimming, Crush With Eyeliner, Gardening at Night, Tongue, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: Back on home turf, the band turns in a great concert, although Michael's voice seems slightly strained by the end. The show is very fun though, and they pull Camera out for the first time since the mid 1980's, I believe. The Great Beyond is excellent, and Losing My Religion is stunning as always. Michael states that this day is the anniversary of Chronic Town being released in 1982, so the band plays Gardening at Night.....a treat!
Live at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, September 10, 1999
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Airportman, Lotus, What's the Frequency,Kenneth?, Wake-Up Bomb, Suspicion, Camera, Daysleeper, Low Desert, Everybody Hurts, The Apologist, Sweetness Follows, The Great Beyond, The One I Love, Find the River, At My Most Beautiful, Finest Worksong, Losing My Religion, Man On the Moon, Walk Unafraid, Hope, Why Not Smile, Pop Song 89, Tongue, Cuyahoga, It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Comments: The second to last show of the 1999 tour (and a night before I saw them for the 3rd time!). This show is really nice, with a great version of the rare Low Desert, as well as some great versions of Suspicion and Losing My Religion. Camera sounds awesome too, and Everybody Hurts is heart wrenching. Just wait till the next night if you think this one kicks!
