The Who Live:1968
Live at Civic Auditorium, San Jose, California, February 21, 1968
Sound: Very good, but distant audience
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Set List:
Substitute, Pictures of Lily, Summertime Blues, Tattoo, Relax, My Way, Happy Jack, I'm a Boy, A Quick One While He's Away, Boris the Spider, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: The first show from the 1968 US Tour, this is a great show. The seamless segue from Substitute into Pictures of Lily is excellent and Relax, Shakin' All Over and My Generation are long jams with awesome passages of contrasting dynamics, themes, and feedback. An excellent, high energy gig from the year that the Who toured the US relentlessly and blew everyone away.
Live at the Fillmore East, New York City, New York, April 5, 1968
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Substitute, Pictures of Lily, Relax, I'm a Boy, C'mon Everybody, A Quick One While He's Away, My Way
Comments: An uncompromising and POWERFUL show, including one of the only times C'mon Everybody was done live, as well as the rare My Way (only performed here and the next night as well). Both are Eddie Cochran songs that sound great and powerful when read by The Who! Relax is an amazing, long jam and the whole show is excellent. Almost the complete show here.
Live at the Fillmore East, New York City, New York, April 6, 1968
Sound Quality: Excellent Soundboard/Recommended
Time: Approx. 70 minutes
Set List:
Summertime Blues, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Little Billy, I Can't Explain, Happy Jack, Relax, A Quick One, While He's Away, My Way, Shakin' All Over, Boris the Spider, My Generation
Comments: This is a great pre-Tommy era show that features some rare numbers being played live, such as Relax, Little Billy, and My Way. Relax and Shakin' All Over feature the long improvisations that would be displayed more in the future. All in all, a great sounding show that features some of the best playing by The Who.
Live at the Singer Bowl, Flushing, New York, August 2, 1968
Sound: Good to very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, A Quick One While He's Away, Magic Bus, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: The Who played at a festival with the Doors here, playing Heaven and Hell live for the first time. The Who were only allowed 45 minutes for their act, and this complete concert showcases the ferocity and energy with which the Who rip through this set. After My Generation, the DJ urges the audience to wait while they clean up the bits of guitars. This show is historic and shows all the gutsy energy with which the Who displayed on stage. A great show and a must have.
Live at Schaeffer Music Festival, Central Park, New York City, New York, August 7, 1968
Sound: Good to very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Substitute, Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Magic Bus, Young Man Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: This is The Who's entire set for this rock festival. It is short and compact and since they dropped the quieter numbers, it is devastating in its impact. The explosive My Generation obliterates the already pummeled crowd. Powerful stuff.
Live at the Jaguar Club, St. Charles, Illinois, August 10, 1968
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 80 Minutes
Set List:
I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Heaven and Hell, Young Man Blues, Daddy Rolling Stone, Summertime Blues, Magic Bus, Boris the Spider, A Quick One While He's Away, My Generation
Comments: A show in a small club, The Who played brilliantly, even reviving Daddy Rolling Stone for this show and jamming away for nearly 20 minutes on a great Magic Bus! The sound is very good and perfectly captures the great, intimate atmosphere of the show, and the gig itself is just brilliant.
Live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California, August 14, 1968
Sound: Good audience
Time: Approx. 80 Minutes
Set List:
Substitute, Heaven and Hell, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Summertime Blues, Young Man Blues, Boris the Spider, Relax, A Quick One While He's Away, Happy Jack, Magic Bus, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: An extremely powerful and uncompromising set, with the new Heaven and Hell containing some excellent soloing from Pete. John and Keith thunder throughout as well, and Roger and Pete and John sing some exquisite harmonies. This whole show is very powerful and the long improvisations on Relax, Shakin' All Over, and My Generation are excellent.

Set List:
Substitute, I Can't Explain, Boris the Spider, A Quick One While He's Away, Magic Bus, Shakin' All Over
Comments: This is a fairly rare show, and an excellent one. Incredibly powerful playing and really great sound on this show. The music is energetic and immaculate, the harmonies stunning, and overall, this show sounds exceptionally ahead of its time in 1968. Powerful, loud, aggressive, and played with a great musical sense and with loads of talent....this is the kind of show that placed The Who ahead of everyone else.
