The Who:Live 1969:
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, May 17, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 75 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Shakin' All Over
Comments: The Who return to New York for their first 1969 Tour with a vengeance! Pete's soloing in Heaven and Hell is great and they charge through Tommy for the first time in front of a New York audience. This is the second of a three-night stand at the Fillmore East. This is complete except for two Tommy songs by combining two different, very good sounding audience sources.
Live at the Rockpile, Toronto, Canada, May 19, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 65 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Pinball Wizard, Substitute, I'm a Boy, Shakin' All Over, Magic Bus
Comments: A complete, short set at the Rockpile on Pete's birthday....the group only decided to play 4 songs from Tommy and conclude the show in a little over an hour. The playing is wonderful, and Magic Bus features some really great and spontaneous soloing from Pete, who leads the group into a Chuck Berry-type jam near the end. Although shorter than usual, a really dynamic set, and unusual and unique!
Live at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, May 25, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Shakin' All Over, Summertime Blues, Magic Bus
Comments: This is the best show from 1969, in my opinion...the playing and energy are just wonderful! The band plays full tilt, fast, heavy, loud, and they ROCK!! The great sound helps this too. Everything about this show is great; there are hardly any pauses between numbers, just one blistering song after another. This is the show where Zeppelin opened for The Who, who blew Zeppelin off the stage, and Pete reminds the crowd about how good Zeppelin's performance was before a killer Magic Bus with 2 minutes of guitar solos by Pete before the songs starts. RECOMMENDED!! (To see all that is left of the Led Zeppelin gig, click HERE).
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, June 6, 1969 (Early Show)
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, Substitute, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Magic Bus
Comments: All that is known to exist from this show, and what we have sounds very good. Magic Bus is very long and possibly one of the best versions ever. Pete solos alone for nearly 5 minutes before the rest of the band joins in and the entire jam at the end is amazing, with the whole band thundering their way through it. Where's the rest!?
Live at Fillmore East, New York City, New York, June 6, 1969 (Late Show)

Time: Approx. 1 Hour
Set List:
Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Pinball Wizard, We're Not Gonna Take It, Substitute, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over
Comments: All that is known to exist from the late show, and it too sounds quite powerful. Young Man Blues is a powerful jam and the remaining Tommy songs in this recording sound good. Shakin' All Over has a great jam and is extended with some amazing riffs. Once again, let's all join in...Where's the rest!?
Live at the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, California, June 13, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, We're Not Gonna Take It, Substitute, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Magic Bus
Comments: All that is know to exist from this show. An excellent show in front of a crowd that seems to be really enjoying the show! Young Man Blues is brutal and the soloing in Shakin' All Over and Magic Bus especially is breathtaking and dynamic, as are the ensuing jams. Where is the rest of this show!?
Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, June 19,1969
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Boris the Spider, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Magic Bus
Comments: This is an incredible show, and the boys play their hearts out to make sure the Bay Area won't forget them any time soon. The Tommy is among the best played in 1969, and the Magic Bus played is a great jam. There are no encores as Pete explains that he and Roger need to be in New York at 9am to be in court for assaulting a cop back in May. An excellent show.
Live at Plumpton Racecourse, Lewes, Sussex, England, August 9, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 20 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey
Comments: The Who's third and final appearance at the National Jazz and Blues Festival. An excellent show from what I can tell from the small amount available. This is all that remains and is known to exist of this great show...I hope some day the rest will see the light. More of this please!
Live at Woodstock, Bethel, New York, August 17, 1969
Sound: Good soundboard, although a little rough in spots
Time: Approx. 65 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, There's a Doctor, Go To the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: Although the Who disowned this show, it is actually a great set, and includes Pete cracking Abbie Hoffman with his guitar! The Tommy part is very aggressive, as is the end of the set, and the end of My Generation contains the basic chord progression for what would become Naked Eye. An historical must!
Live at the Pavilion, Bournemouth, England, August 29, 1969
Sound: Very good, clear audience, though a little distant
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, Go to the Mirror!, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Substitute, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: A great show, and a warm up for the Isle of Wight Festival the next day. The beginning really charges along, and Young Man Blues is jammed on for 10 minutes and is devastating. Tommy is excellent, as always, and an excellent version of Substitute leads to a killer collection of songs at the end, with the jamming at the end of My Generation going incredibly from riff to riff and section to section.
Live at Isle of Wight Festival, East Afton Farm, Isle of Wight, England, August 30, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, My Generation
Comments: A truly electrifying 1969 set, blowing headliner Bob Dylan off the stage. The playing is impeccable and Tommy sounds crisp, perfect and spine chilling in quality. There aren't too many words I can use to describe this gig....this and the show they played the following year at the same festival truly mark this band as one of the greatest live acts. I cannot say anything more...recommended! (An interesting note is that Keith had a broken foot and played the gig with painkiller injections in his foot...still sounds amazing to me!)
Live at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Holland, September 29,1969
Sound: Great soundboard
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, A Quick One While He's Away, Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm a Boy, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, There's a Doctor, Go To The Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: Another incredible show with the addition of Overture and Sally Simpson to Tommy, as well as the small incidental pieces such as Miracle Cure. The playing is top notch, although Roger has some problems with a microphone in the middle. Another triumph of their Opera Houses tour. This one is recommended.
Live at Capitol Theatre, Ottawa, Canada, October 15, 1969
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Sound: Great soundboard or Very good audience
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think Its Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, See Me Feel Me, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over
Comments: A great sounding recording of a great show. The version of Young Man Blues is one of the longest and the BEST version they ever played. It is staggering. Great playing throughout. By combining the two recordings, we have here almost the complete, excellent show!
Live at SUNY Gymnasium, Stonybrook, New York, October 18, 1969
Sound: Excellent audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful
Comments: Pete complains about the echo in the gym, but the sound on the recording doesn't suffer one bit! The playing is so good. Young Man Blues is longer than usual and really heavy, leading right into Tommy, which, as always, is great...I have never really heard a weak Tommy performance. Shakin' All Over is a monster, jammed on for an incredible length. Another typical 1969 show.
Live at the Electric Factory, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October 19, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Summertime Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, My Generation, Magic Bus
Comments: A great, typical, amazing 1969 Who show. Oddly, Pete introduces Summertime Blues before Tommy. Tommy is great as usual and some great jamming and improvisations characterize My Generation and Magic Bus. In all, a great show, typical of the Who, blowing everyone else away. Great sound too.
Live at the Fillmore East, NYC, October 22, 1969
Sound: Great sounding soundboard, although the pitch has been lowered a bit
Time: Approx 55 minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over
Comments: One of the best sounding soundboards from 1969, this show is often mislabeled as June 18,1969. A great show...too bad it isn't complete! The speed is a little slow but it doesn't take away from the music. Except for a weird splice at the end of Eyesight to the Blind, everything is complete and great!
Live at McDonough Gymnasium, Georgetown University, November 2, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 45 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: A simply superb show with excellent sound. Pete gets fed up with the rowdies and the police and tells them very nicely what to do before My Generation...simply exceptional playing...where's the rest?!
Live at Boston Tea Party, Boston, Massachusetts, November 11, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 2 Hours
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: A GREAT 1969 show, particularly good. Tommy is excellent and the beginning and ending, especially the towering My Generation medley, frame the Tommy part in high voltage and potent rock! The entire band is on fire, and Pete in particular delivers some great solos over John's amazing bass and Keith's drums that are all over the place. Roger's voice is amazing too.
Live at SUNY Gymnasium, New Paltz, New York, November 13, 1969
Sound: Very good audience
Time: Approx. 90 Minutes
Set List:
Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think Its Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, My Generation
Comments: Another killer late 1969 Tommy show! Young Man Blues is so heavy and devastating and Tommy sounds quiet, loud, aggressive, plaintive, a whole range of moods and is as strong as ever. My Generation contains an excellent jam at the end that is a bombastic ending to this fabulous concert.
Live at Hippodrome, Bristol, England, December 4, 1969
Sound: Excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 1 Hour
Set List:
Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Comments: What an exceptional show! The playing is better than many other shows I have heard, and that's really saying something. In this superb soundboard recording, you can really hear John' truly amazing and outstanding bass playing fill in the gaps between Pete's great guitar and Keith's manic drumming. This is the last two-thirds of the show....where's the rest?!
