The Who: Live 1970:

Live at Champs Elysees Theatre, Paris, France, January 16, 1970

Sound: Excellent soundboard?/audience?

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, A Quick One While He's Away, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, Naked Eye

Comments: Incredible sound on this show! And right from the beginning, where Pete plays some jazzy chords, to the blast of Heaven and Hell right through to the end of Naked Eye. This is an incredible show, and Young Man Blues is heavy metal at its best! The first songs are crackling, and I Can't Explain is immensely powerful in 2 minutes. A typical 1970 show that was typical for the Who but better than anything else going on in live rock.

Live at Det Kunglige Teater, Copenhagen, Denmark, January 24, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, A Quick One While He's Away, Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm a Boy, Overture, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over

Comments: Another excellent show from early 1970, with a wonderful sounding audience recording to boot! This show rocks hard form the start, and there is almost 40 minutes of material before Tommy, and it all sounds great! Tommy sounds great, and even Sally Simpson, the weakest number live, sounds fine this night. Summertime Blues has a great guitar solo and this entire show is every bit as good as 1/16/70. A definite triumph.

Live at the Leeds University Refectory, Leeds, England, February 14, 1970

Sound: Incredible soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm a Boy, A Quick One, While He's Away, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, Magic Bus

Comments: This is the best show. Hands down, this show is the Who at their Tommy peak, playing effortlessly and with such energy that it is staggering to listen to. This appears to be from the same master tape as the official release, but here it is complete and without the added echo and numerous edits of the official release. Here, we have Tommy, Young Man Blues, Magic Bus, My Generation, and Shakin' All Over without any edits or added effects. Just pure rock energy. Recommended. A must have.

Live at City Hall, Hull, England, February 16, 1970

Sound: Very good soundboard

Time: Approx. 8 Minutes

Set List: Fortune Teller, Tattoo

Comments: The next show after the Leeds gig and recorded for possible use on an album, this show is supposedly brilliant as well. So far, this is all that is known to exist, and I hope the complete tape surfaces because these two songs sound great!

Live at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City, New York, June 7, 1970 (Early Show)

Sound: Good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, The Seeker, Water, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror!, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, My Generation, Naked Eye, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful, Satisfaction

Comments: Excellent show! Water gets its first live treatment in America and the newest single, The Seeker, is played in the set. This is the first night of the 1970 US Tour and the band kicks off with a vengeance. Young Man Blues is vicious and Tommy sounds wonderful. A classic, legendary show, and a great long set from one of The Who's peak years.

Live at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City, New York, June 7, 1970 (Late Show)

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful, My Generation, Naked Eye

Comments: The second show at The Met and another great one. The Who just pound through the set with minimal commentary. They must have been tired having performed two 2-hour shows in one day but the playing does not show it! Tommy is excellent and the finale songs are powerful, including the riffs and jams Pete leads the group through into and out of Naked Eye. He swears at the crowd when they don't come and do an encore, but one can't blame them. Great show.

Live at Mammoth Gardens, Denver, Colorado, June 9, 1970

Sound: Good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, The Seeker, Water, I Don't Even Know Myself, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna take It, Summertime Blues, My Generation, Naked Eye

Comments: A really strong and great show. This was the first time ever I Don't Even Know Myself was played live and the last time ever Sally Simpson was. The show is wonderful, and the sequence of songs leading up to Tommy is brilliant. John is particularly amazing in this show (and that's really saying something!) and this show on the whole marks The Who at a point where every show they played was different and brilliant (which they sustained right until September 8, 1978, when Keith died).

Live at Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California, June 14, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 100 Minutes

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Water, The Seeker, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful, My Generation

Comments: This date served as a substitution for the usual Los Angeles date on the tour, and an amazing show it is! The opening string of songs is fast paced and brutal, and Tommy is as always, exceptional. After Tommy, an excellent Summertime Blues with a great solo from Pete follows, and Shakin' All Over builds up to a climax before the extended My Generation finishes the show. Another 1970 success!

Live at Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California, June 15, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Water, The Seeker, Substitute, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful, My Generation, Naked Eye

Comments: One of the best Who shows ever in a small, intimate venue! The opening string of numbers is devastating, and Substitute is a great version. After the amazing Tommy, the music and energy flow, and some of the best improvisations ever happen in Shakin' All Over, the amazing My Generation medley and a savage yet beautiful Naked Eye. All in all one of the best Who gigs ever! I highly recommend this one!

Live at Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California, June 16, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 100 Minutes

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Water, the Seeker, I Don't Even Know Myself, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take it, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Spoonful, My Generation

Comments: A killer show, cited by Pete as the best of the whole tour, in front of a small crowd in a theatre. The set explodes into the air, and Young Man Blues has some political ad-libs from Roger to the American youth. The Seeker and I Don't Even Know Myself sound great onstage and Tommy is excellent, as always. And as always, the finale after Tommy is bombastic and uncompromising. Another killer 1970 show.

Live at Memorial Auditorium, Dallas, Texas, June 19, 1970

Sound: Excellent audience?/soundboard?

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Water, The Seeker, Substitute, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It

Comments: First, this show has amazing sound! I think it may be an audience only because there are many humorous audience comments captured on the tape that suggests it is near the taper. Second, an amazing show! I Can't Explain is a ripping start and Young Man Blues is staggering. Water is a wonderful jam and excellent versions of The Seeker (described by Roger as their pet-elephant!) and Substitute (Pete: "A pop song!") follow, and Tommy in its entirety sounds wonderful and energetic from the first bars of Overture to the end. Excellent playing and singing throughout this complete show (they did not play more after the Tommy section). It is amazing that The Who could deliver this much excitement and energy and talent night after night. Truly the best live band.

Live at Ellis Auditorium, Memphis, Tennessee, June 21, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Young Man Blues, Water, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, My Generation, Naked Eye

Comments: Another excellent show....this is as complete a source as is known, missing only the first two tracks of the show. Water is and excellent jam and Tommy is brilliant as always. Sparks and Acid Queen really shine and the concluding My Generation medley is long, rocks hard, and contains some truly inspired playing by the band, including some very dynamic and contrasting passages. A brutal yet beautiful Naked Eye finishes it for good.

Live at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, June 29, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 1 Hour

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues

Comments: The Who return to the scene of their explosive 1969 concert to turn in yet another particularly devastating performance. From the outset, this rocks HARD and Young Man Blues is blistering! Tommy is exceptional, especially when captured in this great, vibrant recording. This is the complete show except for the final song, My Generation, which is not known to exist and so far has not turned up. Hopefully someday it will.....this is good stuff!

Live at the Freedom Palace, Kansas City, Missouri, July 2, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 1 Hour

Set List:

Water, Young Man Blues, I Don't Even Know Myself, Overture, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Pinball Wizard, I'm Free, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation

Comments: All that is known to exist from this show in the sweltering heat! The beginning of the set is excellent but it seems that the heat gets to the band, as the end is a little sloppy and Summertime Blues is really ramshackle. Shakin' All Over is great but My Generation loses steam in the middle although by the end they manage to pick it up and perform fiercely. Where's the rest?!

Live at the Tanglewood Music Shed, Lennox, Massachusetts, July 7, 1970

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 100 Minutes

Set List:

Heaven and Hell, I Can't Explain, Water, I Don't Even Know Myself, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Smash the Mirror, Miracle Cure, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, My Generation

Comments: Finally the complete show has surfaced, and it's as I said before...an incredible gig. The pre-Tommy songs are viciously energetic and Tommy is beautiful as always. The My Generation medley is quite powerful and Pete builds up the tension with some feedback and manic soloing before the final crescendo and crash. Definitely seek this show out! This was the final concert of the 1970 US Tour.

Live at the Isle of Wight festival, East Afton Farm, Isle of Wight, August 29, 1970

Comments: This show blows every act that had the nerve to get on stage at this festival away!! High energy and full of great improvisations and surprises, this show marks a time in The Who's live career when they were in total control of the situation, feeling relaxed yet full of energy. Includes early live versions of I Don't Even Know Myself, Water, Naked Eye and a surprise version of Twist and Shout. Excellent show.

Comments: The first show of the 1970 European Fall Tour, and a great, LOUD show, although it is chopped up a bit. Where's the rest of it? Anyway, what we have here is great, especially the thunderous Tommy and the heavy metal blast of Young Man Blues and Water...great stuff!

Live at Orberrheinhalle, Offenbach, Germany, September 13, 1970

Comments: Another great late 1970 European Tour show! The Who tear through this set with energy and the songs before Tommy are exceptional. Water is a rocking jam, and the highlight of the early set. Tommy is great, as always, and the finale, including a monster Shakin' All Over, right up to Magic Bus, caps the event. A great show!

Live at De Doehen Halle, Rotterdam, Netherlands, September 16, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Comments: Another excellent show! The songs leading into Tommy are great and Tommy itself is strong and powerful. Sparks really rocks! Before My Generation, Pete plays a heavy riff and the rest of the band jams on it for a few minutes before the song starts. Naked Eye itself is immensely powerful, and the end is marked by Pete's machine gun riffing and feedback while John and Keith jam out on the rhythm. A very exciting end to a great show.

Live at Vejiby Rissov Hallen, Aarhus, Denmark, September 21, 1970

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

Comments: Great sound and a thunderous show! The beginning of the show explodes, with Water in particular being monstrous, and Keith thunders throughout. Tommy is great as always and the post Tommy part of the set is amazing. Summertime Blues has a great guitar solo and Shakin' All Over and Twist and Shout really get the energy flowing even more. My Generation has some bombastic jamming and all in all, this is a GREAT late 1970 show from The Who. Recommended.
