The Who:Live 1974:

Live at Palais des Grottes, Cambrai, France, February 9, 1974

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, My Wife, My Generation, The Real Me, The Punk Meets the Godfather, I'm One, 5:15, Sea and Sand, Drowned, Bell Boy, Dr. Jimmy, Love Reign O'er Me, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Me

Comments: A really good show in front of a rather rowdy French crowd. Quadrophenia is really fast and strong and the jamming in 5:15 and Drowned is excellent with many passages of unaccompanied guitar, bass, and vocals while Keith plays with the time signatures and entrances....great stuff! The ending pummels the already rowdy crowd into a frenzy.

Live at Palais des Expositions, Paris, France, February 10, 1974

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 100 Minutes

Set List:

I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, My Wife, My Generation, The Real Me, The Punk Meets the Godfather, 5:15, Sea and Sand, Drowned, Bell Boy, Dr. Jimmy, Love Reign O'er Me, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Me

Comments: This was the biggest show of the tour, in front of 26,000. The show is great. Pete plays some great, funky guitar figures before The Real Me starts, and it is very effective. Quadrophenia sounds strong and Drowned is over 10 minutes long and absolutely the best! An excellent show in a very vibrant and good recording.

Live at Sports Palais, Lyon, France, February 24, 1974

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Set List:

I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, My Wife, My Generation, The Real Me, The Punk Meets the Godfather, I'm One, 5:15, Sea and Sand, Bell Boy, Drowned, Dr. Jimmy, Love Reign O'er Me, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard

Comments: This was the last date of the 1974 French tour and the last Quadrophenia show. This is a very good show, and the ferocious treatment of the opening numbers serves as a nice taster for Quadrophenia, which sounds very good and strong, especially Drowned and 5:15. Love Reign O'er Me is Roger's finest hour, as always. This is a rare show and a very good one to have...get it!

Live at The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, North London, England, April 14, 1974

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 90 Minutes

Comments: This is Pete's first ever solo show and what an excellent show! He is all alone playing guitar along with some backing tapes he made and it is absolutely phenomenal! The selection of material is great, including Join My Gang, an aborted 1966 Who song. Pete jumps off the stage and punches a heckler in the beginning but this show is wonderful and one of my all time favorites!

Live at Charlton Athletic Football Club, London, England, May 18, 1974

Sound: Very good soundboard and Very good audience (Soundboard missing 2 songs, audience complete)

Comments: The Who headline an all-day festival and they steal everything away from every other act. A very interesting set for 1974, and the playing is great. Pete claims to have been very drunk but his playing shows no signs of it. A great show, full of energy and fun, and the big event of 1974 for The Who.

Live at Guildhall, Portsmouth, England, May 22, 1974

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 45 Minutes

Set List:

Tattoo, Boris the Spider, Drowned, Bell Boy (abandoned), Bell Boy, Dr. Jimmy, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard

Comments: This was a closed gig played for the cast of the Tommy film, and was not open to the public. The Who play a very relaxed and powerful gig, and Pete doesn't lose his temper when the Bell Boy tape malfunctions and the band gets out of time...he orders it rewound and they start again...go figure! Drowned is wonderful and the whole gig is really rare and great.

Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, June 10, 1974

Comments: A really good first night for the 4-night run. Pete dismissed these shows as being "terrible" but they are in fact quite good. Maybe not as good as Charlton or Leeds, but still excellent. A really interesting set list, including the only time Waspman was done live and the first time Keith is left alone to play a drum solo. Nice to see a lot of Quadrophenia material being played live after it was dropped in February 1974. Drowned in particular is thunderous! A really good show and a rarity.

Comments: The second night and an even better show than the first. Once again an interesting set list, with the towering Punk Meets the Godfather played. 5:15 and Drowned emerge as the two great jam songs and this whole show features some really great playing. A rarity once again and a treat.

Comments: The third night and an even better set! They are having fun at the end...look at all of those cover songs thrown into the My Generation jam. Drowned and 5:15 once again emerge as great jams and another rare and excellent show from this 4-night run.

Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, June 14, 1974

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

I Can't Explain, Summertime Blues, Young Man Blues, Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, My Wife, Magic Bus, Tattoo, Dr. Jimmy, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Me, My Generation, Drowned, Boris the Spider, Substitute, The Punk Meets the Godfather, I'm One, Naked Eye

Comments: The fourth of 4 sold out shows at this venue, these shows were cited by Pete as some of the worst ever performed...they aren't that bad. There are some great moments full over energy and it is nice to see some Quadrophenia numbers since the album had been dropped from the act in February 1974. A shame they didn't keep on performing it. A good show with perhaps a little weak playing from Pete but he still sounds very good. This show is still definitely worth seeking out.
