Sound: Very good to excellent soundboard
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Tracks:
My Radio Station, Here 'Tis, Zoot Suit, Bald Headed Woman, Daddy Rolling Stone, I'm a Man, Leaving Here, Heatwave, Lubie, Motoring, Anytime You Want Me, Shout and Shimmy, My Generation/Land of Hope and Glory, Early Morning Cold Taxi, Girl's Eye, Coke After Coke, Jaguar, Glittering Girl, Great Shakes, Fortune Teller, Melancholia, Dogs (Part 2), Young Man Blues (Studio version), Cousin Kevin Model Child, Broken Poetry, Baby Don't You Do It, Broken Poetry, Behind Blue Eyes
Comments: This is a great collection of extremely rare B-sides and album tracks that were only available in the UK, especially from the My Generation album. This is the Young Man Blues version intended for Tommy, and these other songs and radio jingles are great. A must have.
Assorted Demos and BBC Outtakes 1965-1967
Sound: Very good to excellent soundboard
Tracks:
Girls Eyes, Top Gear, Summertime Blues, Radio One, Happy Jack Jingle, My Radio Station, Coca Cola, Signal 30, Batman, Glittering Girl, The Seeker, Rael Demos (That Motherland Feeling, Rael, Do the Strip, Kill My Appetite), Disguises, Don't Look Away, I'm a Boy, Glow Girl
Comments: A great collection of rare Pete demos for the aborted Rael rock opera as well as some BBC rarities and Signal 30, which appears to be a studio instrumental that was later incorporated into some of the long Relax jams of the 1968 tour. A very nice collection here!
Mono Who Sell Out Mixes, 1967
Sound: Excellent
Time: Approx. 30 Minutes
Tracks:
Armenia City In the Sky, Mary Anne In the Shaky Hand, Odorono, Tattoo, Our Love Was, I Can See For Miles, Magic Bus, Call Me Lightning
Comments: A really great collection of mono mixes from the British LP The Who Sell Out. The long stereo version of Magic Bus is excellent. The different guitar solos present on the mono pressing are here and sound different and lend a different quality to the songs, especially Our Love Was. Great stuff!
The Tommy Demos, Recorded 1968
Sound: Excellent studio
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Tracks:
Overture, It's a Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Christmas, Cousin Kevin, Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Pinball Wizard, There's a Doctor, Go to the Mirror, Success, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, Welcome, We're Not Gonna Take It
Comments: Excellent! These are Pete's home demos with him playing guitar, piano, organ, bass, and drums and singing all the songs for the album. Cousin Kevin and Fiddle About are John's demos of his songs. This is an excellent sounding set, and it presents another perspective to Tommy. These demos are great in their own right, and different form the released album. Also, you can really hear how much scope and breadth the 3 other members of the Who brought to it when they recorded it. Essential for fans who love everything Who!
The Who's Next/Lifehouse Demos, Recorded 1971
Sound: Excellent studio
Time: Approx. 80 Minutes
Tracks:
Baba O'Riley, Bargain, Love Ain't For Keeping, The Song is Over, Gettin' in Tune, Goin' Mobile, Behind Blue Eyes, Won't Get Fooled Again, Pure and Easy, Mary, Too Much of Anything, Join Together, The Relay, Put the Money Down, I Don't Even Know Myself
Comments: Incredible! Baba O'Riley is 13 minutes of instrumental, and sounds great! Here are all the songs intended for Lifehouse and all that were released or played on stage, like Relay, Join Together, Too Much of Anything, Put the Money Down, I Don't Even Know Myself, and Pure and Easy. Mary is exquisite...ranking with Never Ask Me as the best non-released Pete demo ever. This is an incredible collection and a must have for fans of Pete and the Who's songs (essential too are the Tommy, Quadrophenia, and Who Are You demos).
The Quadrophenia Demos, Recorded 1972-1973
Sound: Excellent studio
Time: Approx. 50 Minutes
Tracks:
Unused Piano: Quadrophenia, Love Reign O'er Me, The Real Me, The Dirty Jobs, The Punk Meets the Godfather, I'm One, I've Had Enough, Bell Boy, Cut My Hair, Brrr
Comments: An excellent collection of demos from my favorite Who album. Unused Piano, as once described by Pete, "captures the sense of struggle and drama in the heart of our hero". It is beautiful solo Townshend on the piano, and some parts of it crop up in Cut My Hair and The Dirty Jobs on the final album. This version of Love Reign O'er Me is as gorgeous as the final one at the end of Quadrophenia. Brrr is a fun instrumental, and all of these demos were so good that the Who left the synthesizer parts and just added guitar, bass, drums, and vocals over Pete's demos. These versions of the songs are gorgeous and show once again the genius of Pete Townshend.
The Who By Numbers Demos, Recorded 1975
Tracks:
Squeeze Box, However Much I Booze, Slip Kid, Tribute to Barney Kessel
Comments: Some demos from this really sparse period, in terms of Pete's demos. Slip Kid sounds cool, and Squeeze Box has Pete trying his new accordion out. However Much I Booze is an instrumental, and Tribute to Barney Kessel has Pete playing some great jazz-style guitar. Demos from this era are really rare.
The Who Are You Demos, Recorded 1977
Sound: Excellent studio
Time: Approx. 70 Minutes
Tracks:
Who Are You, Love is Coming Down, New Song, Sister Disco, Never Ask Me, Like It the Way It Is, Love is Wine, Broken Nails, Keep On Working, Guitar and Pen, Music Must Change, Empty Glass, No Road Romance
Comments: These are beyond description. The demos are incredible, sounding like finished songs. Pete truly writes beautiful music and words...Never Ask Me, Like It The Way It Is, and No Road Romance are gorgeous, and it makes me wistful to think of how much better (and that's really saying something) they would have been with the other three guys in the Who. Empty Glass and Broken Nails are beautiful, and it makes me wish everyone of these songs were on Who Are You. If anyone on this planet had any doubts that Pete is a genius, one listen to this will turn them to our side!
