Led Zeppelin:Live 1973:

Live at City Hall, Sheffield, England, January 2, 1973

Sound: Good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Dancing Days, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love

Comments: An excellent show in term of the instrumental machine but Robert's vocals are terrible...he caught the flu hitchhiking to the show when his car broke down. The band sounds great though and rolls through the set with a great Dazed and Confused and a wonderful version of Since I've Been Loving You. Robert's vocals stay very low and his range is not used at all so the band dominates the great medley. Sound is rather noisy but listenable.

Live at New Theatre, Oxford, England, January 7, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 110 Minutes

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Dancing Days, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love

Comments: Robert's voice is still incredibly weak from the flu, but the band is definitely on, with Jones and Bonham shining through in this bass and drum heavy soundboard. Jimmy is incredible too, especially in Dazed and Confused, where he indulges in some exotic and strange sounding soloing in the fast section that sounds quite breathtaking amongst the bashing of the rhythm section. The instrumental machine is playing exceptionally which makes up for Robert's sickness!

Live at the Empire, Liverpool, England, January 14, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Dancing Days, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, The Ocean

Comments: An excellent show, even though Robert's voice is severely damaged by the flu. The band is on fire here though! Dazed and Confused has some truly savage playing and the rhythm section OWNS this show, even though Jimmy plays very well too, especially on the last three numbers. A complete soundboard show except for Rock and Roll missing as the first song...Robert's voice is gone but this is a really great instrumental concert.

Live at Trentham Gardens, Stoke, England, January 15, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Comments: First, the sound here is exceptional. Secondly, even though the entire band is playing incredibly well, Bonham is amazing, using different and unique fills and playing in every song. Whole Lotta Love includes Hendrix's Voodoo Child and contains some really different playing, singing, and drumming, making it one of the best! Overall, even though Robert's voice is still recovering from the flu, this show is wonderful and relaxed, and the band makes some great music here!

Live at St. George's Hall, Bradford, England, January 18, 1973

Sound: Fair to good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Dancing Days, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker

Comments: What a great show. Robert's voice is still rough although the emotion comes pouring through as always. The instrumental machine is unbelievable though. Black Dog is a wonderful example of the three playing off of each other, and Dazed and Confused is incredible. Page and Bonham have this amazing interplay, and Jones and Bonham throw in just about every time signature at the drop of a hat, creating a great effect. The medley is LONG and excellent...Plant throws so many obscure references in. Zeppelin nearing the peak!

Live at Tennishallen, Stockholm, Sweden, March 6, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Dancing Days, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, The Ocean

Comments: An average, although still excellent show. Robert's voice is very strong and the band just plows through the set. Dazed and Confused contains more funk and jazz than heavy rock and is very good. Page's bow solo is very different, and he plays call and response with himself, using octave jumps to create a startling effect. The medley at the end is great fun as always and the end of that and the encores are played with blazing speed and power. A taster of shows to come from this tour.

Live at Messehalle, Nuremberg, Germany, March 14, 1973

Sound: Good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Comments: Although the sound is borderline good/very good, the show is HOT! Robert's voice starts out a little rough but develops into a devastating howl, and the band is playing as well as any night on this tour. The songs are extended, changed and played with such ease that it's frightening. Check out the savage Dazed and Confused, and the amazing medley. Great show.

Live at Stadhalle, Vienna, Austria, March 16, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Comments: This is one of the greatest Led Zeppelin concerts ever and Dazed and Confused here must be the best ever version...absolutely amazing. The whole band, but especially Jimmy, is just unstoppable in this show, playing with such force, guts, dynamics and passion that it must be heard to be believed. Truly outstanding sound and a concert that defies words. RECOMMENDED!!

Live at Olympiahalle, Munich, Germany, March 17, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Comments: Another absolutely fabulous and exceptional show from the 1973 European Tour...quite possibly the best Led Zeppelin tour ever! The entire band is playing better than ever before or since, and Jimmy in particular is absolutely incendiary and beyond words. Every song is nailed with amazing playing and Robert's voice for the most part is fairly strong and bursting with passion. Dazed and Confused is one of the best EVER and the medley is outstanding. It is getting to be difficult to compare these European concerts....they are all phenomenal!

Live at Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany, March 19, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Comments: A great show from Zeppelin's murderous European tour of 1973. The sound is exceptional, and even though his voice is rough, Robert is very energetic. The playing is amazing, quite possibly the peak of Zeppelin's career. Jones and Bonzo are relentless and Jimmy is so amazing it brings tears to my eyes (as a fellow guitarist!). The contrasts of soft and loud make it wrenching, and some quotations in Dazed and Confused from Rollin' and Tumblin' are a treat. A killer show and recommended!

Live at Orthenauhalle, Offenburg, Germany, March 24, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker

Comments: This is undoubtledly the best show from the European tour and one of the greatest shows ever. Jimmy is just unbelievable in his solos, especially on Since I've Been Loving You and Stairway. Dazed and Confused is amazing and the entire set is slick and improvised. Robert's voice sounds very strong and Bonham and Jones are a rhythm section possessed. I would recommend this show to anyone who wants to hear the Led Zeppelin machine at its best.

Live at Palais des Sports, Paris, France, April 1, 1973

Sound: Good to very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Comments: France receives Zeppelin in a storm of cheers! The crowd is wild and the band feeds off of this to deliver one of their greatest shows from this tour. Robert in particular is amazing. His voice is back to its peak form, hitting all the high notes. He sings half of Over the Hills and Far Away in its original key and lets out some eerie howls and shrieks in Since I've Been Loving You. His vocals are great throughout and the band is amazing. Jimmy and Jones are playing off each other and are simply bubbling over and Bonham is on another planet with his playing. Great show!

1973 US Tour Soundcheck

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 1 Hours

Set List:

School Days, Nadine, Round and Round, Movin' On Down the Line, Love Me Like a Hurricane, Move It, Dynamite, Shakin' All Over, Hungry For Love, I'll Never Get Over You, Reelin' and Rockin', Surrender, Sugar Baby (Takes 1 and 2), The Wanton Song, The Rover (Takes 1 and 2), Night Flight (Takes 1 and 2)

Comments: The exact venue from the 1973 tour is not known but what a great piece this is! Robert sounds wonderful on the 50's oldies, as does the whole band, and many songs that would see much later release, such as Night Flight, The Rover, and The Wanton Song, are being worked on here. Sugar Baby is an AWESOME funky workout with Robert singing the melody. Shakin' All Over is markedly different from The Who's definitive version and is effective. A great snapshot of a band developing new music and having fun with the old!

Live at Tampa Stadium, Tampa, Florida, May 5, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, The Ocean

Comments: The second show of the US Tour in front of a record breaking audience that is also completely out of control! The playing varies between brilliant and sloppy. Dazed and Confused is a fine example of this. Some sections sound great and others have Jimmy way by himself. The drum solo segues into Heartbreaker and then into Whole Lotta Love, the only time this is ever done. A very good show but not tops and nowhere near the nirvana reached in just a week.

Live at Municipal Auditorium, Mobile, Alabama, May 13, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick

Comments: This show is spectacular. The band is in top form and deliver one of the best from this tour. Jimmy's playing is incredibly fluent and great, especially on Misty Mountain Hop leading to Since I've Been Loving You. Dazed and Confused is beyond description, and the whole show is timeless. Shame the complete one isn't available. Highly recommended.

Live at Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana, May 14, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, Dazed and Confused, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown

Comments: A really good show. Robert's voice is cracking and breaking all over the place, but the band is playing exceptionally well, and from Dazed and Confused on, this show reaches its peak. Dazed has a unique bow solo and Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love and the encore are gutsy and raw and Robert has recovered. Another great May 1973 show.

Live at Houston, Texas, May 16, 1973

Sound: Good to very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown

Comments: One word describes this show...VIOLENT! The band's playing and attack is relentlessly aggressive...listen to No Quarter, Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker.....they are pushing everything to the limit. The vibrant, overloading recording only helps to emphasize this quality...this is a GREAT show; Robert really pushes himself to the max with the rest of the band. One of my favorites.

Live at Memorial Auditorium, Dallas, Texas, May 18, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 110 Minutes

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven

Comments: This is almost the complete show and all that exists. A mixed performance rushed and tense for the most part as Jones is playing with fractured ribs! The first 3 numbers are very rushed and sloppy but Since I've Been Loving You is outstanding and Dazed and Confused is rather loose but very exciting and energetic. Where's the rest?

Live at Tarrant County Convention Center, Fort Worth, Texas, May 19, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven

Comments: Another great sounding show. This is an excellent show from the first leg of the 1973 US Tour, on par with the incredible 5/13/73 show. The whole band sounds strong with some immense drumming from Bonham. Robert screeches and sounds strong and Jimmy and JPJ steamroll through the set. Another shame the rest of the gig isn't available.

Live at the Forum, Inglewood, California, May 31, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Stairway to Heaven, Dazed and Confused, Moby Dick, Happy Birthday, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown, The Ocean

Comments: An amazing show on Bonham's 25th birthday. The group all celebrates, turning in one of their finest performances ever! Every song features incredible playing from everyone, and the long improvisations are top notch....of particular note are that during this concert through the June 3 one, Jimmy is playing with a sprained left finger and ices it between numbers....his playing is so amazing I never would have known it! Another classic...recommended!!

Live at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, California, June 2, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown, The Ocean

Comments: A really big outdoor festival show and one of the greatest concerts ever! The sound is amazing and Robert's voice is very powerful...he screams and gets right up there for perhaps the last time in his career...his range would be lessened on the following tours. The entire band shines on this show, and Dazed and Confused is one of the best versions ever with Bonham and Jones going crazy at the end with the complex rhythms. No Quarter is one of the best 1973 versions and the entire show is excellent!

Live at the Forum, Inglewood, California, June 3, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, The Ocean, Communication Breakdown, Organ Solo, Thank You

Comments: The last show of the first leg of the 1973 US Tour features THE best show from 1973. Robert is in incredible voice, John Paul is amazing as always, Bonham is thunderous and grooves and Jimmy, despite a sprained left finger (?!) is as amazing as ever! This entire show is unreal, with the 30 minutes of Dazed and Confused and 20 minutes of Whole Lotta Love standing out among all of the improvisations. Since I've Been Loving You is one of the most emotional and best versions ever played, bested only by the version played here on June 25, 1972 (see 1972). This is a must have. Recommended.

Live at Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, July 6, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Comments: This is the first show of the second leg of the 1973 US Tour and a very rough performance for Robert's voice. At the start of the show it is completely gone and he cannot even hit his middle range. By the middle he warms up a bit but he is still rough and weak throughout. The band, however, is tense and thus brutal in their readings. Jimmy's soloing is out of this world and the rhythm section commands the long improvisations in Dazed and Confused. A very poor choice for an encore due to Robert's voice and overall, an uneven performance.

Live at Civic Center, St. Paul, Minnesota, July 9, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Dancing Days Intro, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Laurel and Hardy Theme, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Communication Breakdown

Comments: This show starts off very slow and sluggish. The band is more loose than tight and Robert's voice is incredibly raspy and in poor shape, much like the Chicago show from 3 days earlier. However, by Dazed and Confused, his voice is strong and his singing is amazing. Dazed is very long and very loose but exciting and Jimmy's solo in Stairway is sheer beauty. The final three songs rock very hard and the improvisations are very spontaneous, loose, and thrilling to hear! A great recovery!

Live at the Arena, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 10, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Comments: Robert starts this show very low and hoarse but he recovers halfway through. The band is on top form however, and from the brutal middle of Rock and Roll, this is a great show. Black Dog is wonderful, and Jimmy tears his heart and soul out for a beautiful Since I've Been Loving You. Dazed and Confused is just great, with the rhythm changes and spontaneous additions making it slightly different and a great listen. The tape cuts off and is incomplete, missing Heartbreaker and the end medley and encores...where is it!?

Live at Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, July 12, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Comments: This is one of the greatest Led Zeppelin concerts ever! A killer show from the band, especially Jones, who's bass is particularly aggressive. The funky jamming in Whole Lotta Love is excellent with the bass and drums working overtime while Jimmy's Theremin and Robert's shrieks battle over the cooking rhythm section! A great version of Dazed and Confused played here too! The Ocean encore sounds great except for some incredibly idiotic and moronic singing by the taper.

Live at Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, July 13, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 30 Minutes

Set List:

Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Dancing Days

Comments: These are only the last 4 songs from the show and all that is known to exist from it. Robert's voice sounds really damaged but the band is unreal in Whole Lotta Love and Jimmy's soloing in Heartbreaker is breathtaking. This is the only time Dancing Days was played on the US Tour in 1973 and the last time it was ever played in electric form....it would show up in the acoustic sections of 1977.

Live at Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, Washington, July 17, 1973

Sound: Excellent audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Comments: Another of the great 1973 US Tour shows....from the onset the band is ready to play and they take no prisoners! The improvisations, especially No Quarter and the immensely long Dazed and Confused are fresh and unique and sound very different from anything heard before. The end has Robert screaming as the band jam on the end of The Ocean. Killer show.

Live at Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, July 20, 1973

Sound: Good audience

Time: Approx. 2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love

Comments: The recording sound gets quite good in the middle of the show and is good throughout. Two things plague the show: Robert's very weak voice and the out of control crowd. The band drops Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, and Moby Dick in efforts to calm the crowd. The band itself is playing really well, and Dazed is a great version. However, the crowd is out of control and the band punishes them with no encores, ending the show at slightly less than 2 hours. The crowd can't believe it, but that's what they get for not heeding the pleas of Robert when people are getting crushed in front. Robert even sings "Take it easy" in the middle of Dazed but to no avail. The show is played really well though.

Live at Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, July 21, 1973

Sound: Very, very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, The Ocean

Comments: This show is simply HOT! The whole band is on and plays incredibly powerful, beautiful music. Robert has recovered most of his range it seems, even letting some unearthly screams out in Dazed and Since I've Been Loving You. Jimmy is a man possessed and the rhythm section plays as if they were the lead instruments too! Highlights from this wholly excellent show include one of the best No Quarter versions ever, an amazing Dazed and the earth shaking Heartbreaker into Whole Lotta Love. Coupled with the crisp, LOUD audience recording, this is one of the best!

Live at Civic Center, Baltimore, Maryland, July 23, 1973

Sound: Good to very good audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Comments: A very overlooked show but one of the best from the end of the tour. Robert's voice is surprisingly strong and he reaches up high at the end of Rock and Roll and shreds his vocal chords in a great version of Since I've Been Loving You. The band is playing very slick and Page completely reverses the sections of Dazed and Confused, and the end result is a very dynamic and gutsy version. The end blowout of Heartbreaker to the encore is pure Zeppelin nirvana and the crowd's approval is deafening. If you're looking for a great show that isn't as famous as others, but right up there on the performance level, this one is worth seeking out!

Live at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 24, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 2 1/2 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, The Ocean

Comments: A really great, vibrant recording of an absolutely riotous show! After the sluggish start of the 2nd leg of the tour, things have been heating up and this show is definitely a fine example! The crowd's way into it and the band overplay themselves by giving one of the most visceral, savage concerts ever! The machine of Page, Jones and Bonham is beyond description, especially in the immense Dazed and Confused with its very long and eerie bow solo and amazing interplay in the middle. No Quarter is also funky and hard and Jimmy gives us one of his longest and best solos linking Misty Mountain Hop and Since I've Been Loving You. Heartbreaker begins with Bonham pounding all hell out of his kit and the ending numbers are a joy to hear, especially how Robert controls the crowd. His voice has been powerful and savage this whole show. What a concert!

Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, July 28, 1973

Sound: Excellent soundboard

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Comments: The second show of the three night stand and the second to last of the 1973 tour, this is a very good, although somewhat loose show. Robert's voice alternates between being very strong and creaking a bit but it is surprisingly strong in Since I've Been Loving You and Stairway to Heaven. The band is playing very well, in a loose and exciting Dazed and Confused. Moby Dick is extremely long yet somewhat exciting and the last three numbers rock hard!

Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, July 29, 1973

Sound: Very good audience

Time: Approx. 3 Hours

Set List:

Rock and Roll, Celebration Day, Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter, The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Moby Dick, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, The Ocean, Organ Solo, Thank You

Comments: The final New York show and the last concert of the 1973 Tour. What a great show! If any one concert can represent the absolute pinnacle of Led Zeppelin, this is the one. The opening numbers are just powered through and Jimmy's playing is spectacular! Jones is excellent on bass and turns in some great keyboard playing, especially on No Quarter. Dazed and Confused is an excellent version and by Stairway, the band has left mere mortal status. Moby Dick is immensely long and rather boring but from Heartbreaker to the end, there is a riot that has the crowd, as well as the listener, in an absolute frenzy....the music's that good!
