Aromatherapy is an ancient art being
rediscovered in our time. The Egyptians were inveterate aromatherapists.
Scent, in its myriad forms, was firmly interwoven into every aspect of their
daily lives. According to Scott Cunningham, it was the most valuable currency.
In Magical Aromatherapy: The Power of Scent, he states that the
Egyptians demanded frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, and cinnamon from those
vanquished by them in battle. He also explains that such ingredients were used
"in medicine, food preservation, cooking, religion, and magic"(Cunningham,1989, p. 10).
As Pagans, we appreciate the beauty of scent as a gift from our Great Mother.
We, too, use the sacred, exotic, and delicious scents of oils, incense, and
herbs in our daily lives.
Remember when trying any new fragrance, oil, or essence do a 24-hour patch test
to prevent allergic reactions on sensitive skin.
Many essential oils are considered harmful to women who are pregnant. Please check
with your Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Herbalist, or Homeopathic Provider before
using any aromatherapy items.
