There are many reasons throughout the Wheel of the Year when, as Pagans, we make offerings. The birth of a child, buying a new home, to begin the planting season, to celebrate the harvest and at the passing of a loved one to the Summerlands. Offerings are gifts of a symbolic nature to demonstrate love, respect and gratitude. They traditionally can be any number of things. A prayer or poem written on paper, a sprig of herbs, flowers from your garden, a piece of fruit, a small bag filled with relevant stones or crystals can all be offerings.
Some offerings are buried in the ground, such as blue corn seeds at the start of spring as gratitude for the fertility of the Mother Goddess. At Samhain, apples, pomegranate and hazelnuts are buried in the garden to nourish the spirits of the dead on their journey. Other offerings can be burned, such as dried herbs, incense, prayers, candles and resins. Many offerings, however, are handmade crafts that are placed on the altars of Pagan families. These serve as a constant reminder of the need to be thankful for the bounty Nature provides us.
No matter the type or reason for the offering, it is given in loving tribute to the Mother Goddess, or the memory of a loved one.
