It's no secret that koalas are some of the best-loved creatures in the animal kingdom. Now for the first time, the koala's story is portrayed in a large format with 160 striking photographs and accompanying text. The Koala Book describes the native forests before the onset of human settlement. Only in some of the old-growth forests such as Wild Cattle Creek can one catch a glimpse of how koalas might have lived. Interaction among themselves and with people, as well as the very important issue of species endangerment and the need for increased conservation efforts to save the koala, are covered.
Smithsonian Book of Giant Pandas
Wild panda populations remain in only a few mountain ranges in central China, and their natural environment is shrinking as humans bring about environmental changes. This book is part of an ongoing effort, supported through major funding and initiatives by the Smithsonian, to educate the public about the giant pandas and the world in which they live. The authors, who are affiliated with the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, DC, visited panda reserves in China to observe the animals in their natural habitat. Their book traces the natural and cultural history of the panda and its interactions with humans and discusses the challenges to conservation and preservation posed by the species. It also notes the political aspects that are part of any conservation effort. The authors feel that a bright future for pandas is possible but that much remains to be done. The book is enhanced with over 170 full-color photographs of giant pandas and the habitat they share with other wild creatures. Recommended for public libraries where there is interest in wildlife and conservation.

Parrots : A Guide to Parrots of the World
The author has had much experience with black bears, and his tales of encounters with bears enliven the text. The inherent shyness of this bear has allowed it to survive in a human-altered world and allowed it to live near people and their pets without challenging them. This well-written book about our most numerous bear, the one most people have a chance of seeing, is therefore highly recommended.
Much of this book considers bison through observations of persons living intimately with them or their idea. There are as many passages relating what native americans and government officials have to say about bison as there are passages describing the author's direct contact with the animals.
This unique atlas, written by a team of experts with support from a variety of organizations, summarizes our present knowledge of the geographic distribution and conservation status of coral reefs. The outstanding color maps, based on coral reef mapping from the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre, depict major natural features as well as human factors, such as settlements and dive centers. Two hundred color photographs illustrate reefs and reef organisms. Eighty-five photographs of coral reefs taken by NASA astronauts from space provide another perspective.
