THE BIRTH CAUL is a recording of a live performance given by Alan Moore, David J, and Tim Perkins in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK on 11/18/95. As the performance was a once-only event, this album provides a unique document of a powerful and shamanistic occasion.
Alan Moore is well-known as a writer who has worked extensively in the field of comic-strip books and magazines where he has received acclaim for his work with the British 2000 AD and in America with SWAMP THING and WATCHMEN. He has also established a reputation for his performance of spoken word material, as a novelist, and as a writer of examinations of historical serial murder cases.
David J was a founding member of the seminal British group BAUHAUS. Subsequently, he has produced a number of solo albums, worked with the Jazz Butcher, and is currently a member of the group Love & Rockets.
Tim Perkins is a composer and musician who has previosly worked with Alan Moore and David J, as well as composing large-scale orchestral work.
THE BIRTH CAUL is the ancient English name for the residual membrane from the amniotic sac that envelops the head of some newborn babies. A traditional belief holds that if the caul is kept (usually by peeling it away onto a piece of paper) it can be used as a talisman that will protect the child from death by drowning for a lifetime.
The material that formed the performance of THE BIRTH CAUL and this album consists of text written and spoken by Alan Moore over music composed and performed by David J and Tim Perkins.
