A strange fellow is following Kyousuke on his way to school. After a while, Kyousuke decides to confront him, makes a quick trip around the block and comes up behind. This fellow is Hino Yuusaku. He warns Kyousuke not to get to friendly with ``her,'' emphasizing his point by punching a major dent in a light pole. Kyousuke remembers Madoka's words at the end of last episode, and thinks she's who he's talking about. Yuusaku promises to get ``her'' back from him, and walks off.
At school there's a full week of tests; Kyousuke's worried. Worse than that, Komatsu and Hatta try to use the excuse of studying together to get close to his sisters, ``How about a little private tutoring in a cake shop?'' The gals like this, but Kyousuke isn't pleased with his classmates, expecting the worst from them.
Back in class, Komatsu and Hatta comment that Madoka is being a good girl lately. Even though she's a punk, she's smart enough that she doesn't have to study anyway. Kyousuke thinks that she's really great, looking like she's not troubled by the test at all. But, his thoughts then turn to Yuusaku.
Hikaru and Kyousuke are at the library. She's begging him to tutor her for the exam, everyday! Hikaru takes his equivocation as a positive answer and is overjoyed. His attention is caught by someone peering around the bookshelves. As he guesses, it's Yuusaku keeping an eye on him. Yuusaku ducks out of sight, almost dumping the entire contents of the bookcase on himself.
After school, Kyousuke goes to Abcb and finds Madoka there, studying. He's surprised that she has to study too, but she says the exams at this school are tough. Master gives him a free coffee, and Madoka suggests that they study together. Kyousuke can't bring himself to tell of studying with Hikaru and laments his indecisiveness. They hear a noise outside. Madoka thinks it's the neighborhood cat, but Kyousuke thinks (correctly) that it's Yuusaku watching him.
Hikaru has a whole pile of books at the library to help study. Kyousuke isn't happy about it, but trys to help her study. She has done ``helpful'' things such as making her vocabulary cards the same color as his. She makes him stay till the very end. He's late and teleports to make it to Abcb on time. He appears and is shocked to see Yuusaku standing over him. It's his imagination, he really is in front of the statue of ``Mr. Fried Chicken'' (Col. Sanders).
Madoka is being a good teacher and tells Kyousuke that the key to studying is concentration. Since she said it in English, he at first gets it wrong, but laughs that off as a joke. Yuusaku is outside and sees them studying together, making him even more mad. Thanks to Madoka's help, Kyousuke is able to better tutor Hikaru. He ends up repeating what Madoka tells him, verbatim.
A week of studying, tutoring and teleporting have taken their toll on
Kyousuke. He falls asleep during a study session with Madoka. She
wakes him up, and he notices that she smells nice, like Hikaru did when
close dancing (in episode 3) only much better. Master returns from
shopping and Madoka goes to help him carry in the groceries. She
suggests they call it a night, and Kyousuke leaves. He finds Yuusaku
waiting for him outside. He warns Kyousuke again, and calls him on
two-timing.
At school, Kyousuke notices that Yuusaku is still keeping an eye on him.
Madoka finds him in the hall and loans him a notebook to study from.
When Hikaru interrupts them, their embarrassed looks are classic. She
notices Madoka's notebook and offers to loan Kyousuke hers too. Madoka
thinks she's cute to try to help those 2 grades up. Yuusaku comes
across Hikaru in the hall and tries to talk to her, but she's in a hurry
and runs off before he gets the courage to tell her what he wanted.
Madoka tells Kyousuke that she's found some good materials at a
bookstore and suggests they meet there. He can't make it right after
school, and Madoka will be working at Abcb by the time he can. They
pass Yuusaku as they walk down the hall. Madoka greets him as Yuu-kun.
He wishes her luck on the exams too. They enter the music room and
Madoka tells Kyousuke that Yuusaku's an old friend. He, Hikaru and her
used to play together as kids. They even bathed together. This last
upsets Kyousuke who slams the door on his finger. While Madoka plays
the recorder she asks Kyousuke if he has something that he should be
telling her.
Jingoro is trying to sneak out again when he is interrupted by Takashi
bringing home dinner. It's ``Mr. Fried Chicken.'' He and the twins sit
down to dinner, but Kyousuke stays in his room, trying to study. He
can't concentrate on it; his mind keeps going back to images of Yuusaku
and Madoka and their taking a bath together.
Komatsu almost discovers that Kyousuke and Madoka are studying together
when he picks up the notebook on Kyousuke's desk. After grabbing back
the notebook Madoka made for him, Kyousuke notices her talking with
Yuusaku on the school roof. He goes to investigate, worried Yuusaku
really is interested in her. He meets Madoka coming down from the roof.
Due to the vagaries of Japanese, he first understands what she says as,
``He really likes me,'' instead of, ``He really likes her'' as Madoka
meant. Madoka soon clears up the confusion, and Kyousuke is relieved to
learn that it is Hikaru, and not Madoka, who Yuusaku is after; he's
liked her ever since they were little. He even admits his surprise to
Madoka.
After their last session, Hikaru tells Kyousuke she'll buy him coffee at
Abcb. He realizes he can't go there with her, but she won't be put off.
He even uses his power to try and stop this, (jamming a door shut, and
activating a train crossing gate when there's no train there) but that
only delays the inevitable. At Abcb, Madoka comes over to their table,
and Hikaru starts to tell about their studying when Kyousuke stands up
and asks for a menu. He's obviously nervous about being found out.
When he opens the one Madoka returns with, he is very surprised, not
because of the higher prices that Hikaru guesses, but rather, at the
note Madoka wrote to him inside.
That evening Kyousuke falls asleep at his desk. He can't concentrate
enough to study because he's too tired from using his power to avoid
Yuusaku and the like. ``No,'' he thinks, ``Maybe it's because there was
something in that menu that relieved me.''
The note says: ``You might look bad if Hikaru finds out that I've been
teaching you, so I'll keep that a secret. I wrote all the check points
for the test in this last notebook. My guess is usually correct. Good
luck. from Madoka-sensei''
That night at home, Madoka wonders if she's become too sweet and asks
her reflection in the window, ``Since when did you become this sweet,
Madoka-san?''
The tests are finally over and the scores are posted. Madoka scored
near the top of the class, while Kyousuke is third from the bottom.
Komatsu and Hatta are happy, their scores are near his. Yuusaku tries
to talk to Hikaru again, but can't find the courage.
Kyousuke is happy things worked out ok. Hikaru didn't find out about
the studying, and Madoka was kind to him. He's sorry for Yuusaku, but
happy for himself. Madoka then walks up and asks him about his score on
the test. ``Well, maybe not all happy,'' he thinks.
