Welcome to the Letters Page,
everybody! Two great announcements this issue! First, I'm a new dad! My daughter, Ellen, was
born Jan. 30! Second, and of more interest to you comic fans, my fifth CD-ROM is now available!
It's the second Pure Excitement Comics Super Special, which is set up like a larger version
of the on-line web`zine. For more details on the contents and ordering info, check out the CD-ROM
link in the column to the left. Here are some letters I received during the past month:
Hi Bill! I just want to say PEC 29 was
another great issue! I've never been a fan of western stuff but this issue is changing my mind
somewhat. Just like past issues have changed my mind about jungle stories. I'm also pleased to
learn that you're working on another Super Special. I've loved all of your CDs but that one was
my favorite. Also, a quick note to Randy: A VERY special Yank & Doodle story is in All-Amazing
Comics #6 which should be online by the time this is posted. I'm sure you can give him directions
to get to my site.
Cheers, Steve
P.S.-I'm 110% in favor of a Nedor Super Special
for your 6th CD!!!
Steve, glad to hear you enjoyed the
Western-themed issue. I don't buy a lot of books featuring Western characters, but I do own
some, so I thought it might be fun to feature a few stories on the site. Also, anyone intersted
in checking out other great reprints on-line are urged to click on over to Steve's site, Golden Years,
the first related link in the column to the left. And Steve, as you've no doubt heard by now, the
second Super Special is now available! And don't worry, I'm already 75 percent done the scanning for
my sixth CD-ROM - the Nedor Super Special! Here's a sample of the characters featured on that CD:
the American Crusader (origin story), Doc Strange, Miss Masque, the Liberator, the Ghost, Capt. Future,
Spectro, the Scarab, Mystico, the Phantom Detective, the Four Comrades, the Commando Cubs, the Woman
in Red, the Fighting Yank, and the Black Terror, along with five stories previously featured on the web site
starring the American Eagle, Pyroman, Wonderman, the Grim Reaper, and the Oracle. Give me a few weeks to
finish this one up (or longer), it's tough to get around to scanning when there's an infant in the house!
Dear Bill: First I would like to tell you how
much I enjoy "Pure Excitement Comics." Although I've liked just about every strip you've presented so far,
I think that "Chuck Magnon, the Immortal Man" is my favorite. It was a good natured and cleverly written story.
Too bad that it was Chuck's only appearance. I also liked your latest effort, the Western-themed issue.
The mixture of the aviation and Western genres in "Triggers" reminded me of one of my favorite childhood TV
shows, "Sky King." I suspect that the Triggers character may have been inspired, at least visually, by
"Smiling Jack," a once popular newspaper strip character. Billy West was also fun. Believe it or not,
the writer(s) actually had me going for a while as to whether or not "Dude" was a bad guy! "The Toreador"
was OK, but certainly no threat to "The Cisco Kid" (another old-time TV favorite of mine).
Mark Pankratz
Mark, thanks for the kind words about my web site. It's always
great to hear from fans. Chuck Magnon is one of my favorites as well, and others often mention the story in e-mails to me.
I'm also glad to hear you enjoyed the Western-themed issue as much as you did. I wasn't sure how my regular readers
would react to such non-costumed material. Glad to see it was enjoyed.
Thanks for the great Briefer Frankenstein
comics! I love these, wish somebody would publish a book collection of them. I just discovered
your page while looking for Briefer info. Great old comics - I hope you will continue with the
Frankenstein. I'd also love to see some of Jack Cole's (under the name Ralph Johns) one-page
humor comics, like "Wun Cloo" and "Burp the Twerp".
Thanks again,
Shane Glines
Shane, I'm always glad to hear
from other Frankenstein fans! Frankenstein, by the way, was one of the features on my
first Pure Excitement Comics Super Special CD-ROM. I only own one other Frankenstein
story which I haven't reprinted yet, but it suffers from being the end of a multi-part
story (I think so anyway, based on my reading of it). It features Frankenstein under
the control of the Nazis (in a full Nazi uniform, no less) because he has lost his memory
for some reason. I may feature it in the future, but I like to stay away from multi-part
stories when I'm unable to reprint all the parts. I haven't thought about featuring any
one-page humor strips, but I'll keep your request in mind if I come across any of interest.
That's it for the letters
page this month. Be sure to check back next month for three more great reprints!
