The Chesma Church
In 1774-1777 in the Southern part of St. Petersburg a so-called
Chesma Palace (architect Yu. Felten) was constructed after the
order of Catherine the Great. It was used as a place where Catherine
could stop for a rest on her way from St. Petersburg to her country
residence. The palace got its name in commemoration of the victory
of Russian Fleet over Turkish Fleet at Chesma Bay. Near the Palace
the Chesma Church was erected in 1777-1780 by the same architect.
It is one of the rare pseudo-gothic buildings in St. Petersburg.
Today it is an active orthodox church.
