St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral
The cathedral has functioned througout the 20th century. From
1941, it has been the main cathedral of the city. Built to Savva
Chevakinsky's design in 1753-1762. The cathedral is famous for
its Upper Church iconostasis (work of Russian 18th-century carvers).
One of the sacred objects preserved in it is the icon of St. Nicholas,
taken away by the French in 1812 and returned to Russia in 1835.
On the walls inside, plaques are dedicated to the memory of perished
Russian sailors. The cathedral has functioned througout the 20th

The Cathedral's famous iconostasis
