The Armorial Hall
The ceremonial Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace was constructed
by the architect Vasily Stasov in late 1830s. The gilt bronze
chandeliers bear representations of the coats-of-arms and heraldic
emblems of all the Russian provinces. Sculptural groups of warriors
of Old Russia stand on both sides of the doors. The colonnade
supporting the balcony with a balustrade, a frieze bearing an
ornament of acanthus leaves, and combination of gold and white
create a spirit of considerable pomp and splendour. This hall
is a typical example of late Russian Classicism.
