The Malachite Room

The Malachite Room was created by the architect Alexander Bryullov in 1837 as a drawing room for Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna, the wife of Emperor Nicholas I. Against the white scagliola walls, decorated with figures representing Day, Night and Poetry, stand pilasters and columns in malachite mosaic (the "Russian Mosaic" technique ). The combination of bright-green malachite, rich gilt and raspberry drapery create a sumptuous interior.
