The White Hall
The White Hall of the Winter Palace was created in 1841 by
the architect Alexander Bryullov in honour of the forthcoming
wedding of Grand Prince Alexander Nikolayevich (later Emperor
Alexander II) to Maria Alexandrovna, Princess of Hessen-Darmstadt.
The Hall is rich with stucco decorations: the vault and pilasters
are ornamented with stucco and the frieze shows figures of Puttis,
playing and amusing themselves. The central part of the hall is
decorated with Corinthian columns crowned with figures personifying
the arts. Stucco representations of armour and above them are
bas-relief figures of Gods of Ancient Rome. The room houses several
pieces of unique furniture designed by David Roentgen, a celebrated
master of the era of Classicism. The hall houses splendid pictorial
works by the 18th-century French landscapist Hubert Robert.
