Måløy

Måløy (Vågsøy), Sogn og Fjordane

The town of Måløy was a strategical important place during WWII. This in particular because of the many wharfs and docks in the town. The town was also surrounded by several forts and fortresses, and many defence objects were built in the town itself as well. Many of these are gone today, but some still remain. After the allied commando raid on the town in 1941, the Måløyraid, the defences were significantly strenghtened, and the German fort on the small island in the dock area, was abandoned after it was destroyed in the raid, and not put back in service again. It was too vulnerable on that location. Several tunnels and huge bunkers were built in the town. Some of these are still in use, either by the civil defence, or by different companies. I have not yet pictures of all the objects, but I visit the town regularly, so there will be more to come. But I have a few, that you will find below.

Bunker
Bunker blasted into the rock at the roadside just outside the towncentre. The armoured door was removed after the war. Used as ammunition storage.

Bunker
Bunker under the bridge. Probably ammunition storage.

Bunker
A gun bunker (casemate). For defending the docks. Now used as a storage for machine parts. One of the protective walls is partly demolished. Today the bunker is in danger of being demolished due to a construction project on the site. It's location is just over the road from the bunker above.

Bunker
Same as above, different angle.
