The Art of Mythos by Hansen-Hill
"Inspiration for my paintings comes from a variety of sources. I like classical and mythological themes, but quite often, the research I'm doing for one of my books will lead into a series of paintings. This was the case with my lightning series. I was writing The Light Play Trilogy at the time, and was drawn to the idea of painting lightning, against a New Zealand background. I drew on both NZ landscapes and mythology, for the ten-painting series.
The Grave Images books have inspired me to play with paranormal themes, and I'd love to do a series of ghost paintings one of these days. For a postgrad project in computer graphic design, I'll be painting ten to twenty pieces based on my latest book (as yet untitled). I'll then photograph them, and use them in an animated short feature.
I've been painting for four years. I have to admit my first efforts were dismal. One of my paintings turned out better than I'd intended, though, and I was hooked. In my usual crazed fashion, I went to the library and read every book they had on painting techniques. I really don't know what happened after that. One of my paintings placed in a regional competition, and the local gallery curator asked to see any works I had in progress. I've had work in quite a few NZ exhibitions, and learned a lot about the art business by opening and managing an artists' collective over a two-year period.
I write more than I paint. If I don't paint for a month or so, I always wonder whether I still can. It was such an unexpected "gift", that I always think it'll vanish as quickly as it came. No one was more shocked than I when people began to purchase my work.
My "public" now expects two characteristics from a Hansen-Hill painting: raised relief and some gold, copper or silver flourishes.
My publisher, Clocktower Books, allows me to design and paint all the covers for my books, after which they apply the titles and blurbs. I'm quite pleased with the results. Brian Callahan has made a big effort to make the titles mesh well (in both font and color) with my artwork. You can see some of the results at my web site. I use blurred versions of my paintings as backgrounds for the pages. The individual book pages also include partial depictions of the covers.
My work experience is rather diverse. I've worked as a landscape designer, contractor, plant nursery owner, irrigation installer (golf courses and bowling greens), Montessori teacher, goat dairy owner, duck egg business owner, warehouse person, clerical person, school bus driver, graphic designer, artist, author, and plant pathology consultant. Goals? To go back and study more molecular biology, and possibly do a Ph.D. in plant pathology (specifically viruses or fungi). At present, I'm studying computer graphic design, and enjoy video and animation work. I've written a few screenplays and would like to write/direct my own films, and do some animated features. I might base one of them on The Trees Series (my fantasy suspense books).
I'll continue to write (for a while, anyway), because I really enjoy it. I've been writing novels for five-and-a-half years, and have eleven in print. Number twelve is in rough draft, and I'm working on a brand new book, which is distinct from my other series.
I can't believe my luck, and I still think that getting published is half dumb luck, with a goodly portion of "right place, right time" thrown in. The paintings? Don't ask me - I can't explain it. I'd love to waffle on, about inner turmoil and emotional angst, but I can't. I'm too darn happy.
I think I'm just the luckiest person on Earth... "
