critical review of
Shade's Children
by Garth Nix
Shade's Children was an fairly good book. There is no doubt in my mind that this book could have been better, though. The high amount of unnecessary vulgarity
took away and distracted me from the finer points of the book. It is very clear to me that, as a writer, that it is important to let your characters speak freely as they would, and not try to censor them, but their may be only one case where the vulgarity might have been justified. It was very off-putting, to me.
However, there was a very solid, alluring plot line that kept me reading this book. A page-turner, if you will. The writing quality was good, but also, there was yet another disgusting point in the book. The characters in the book were children, and all of them were running around like little hoochies, and what was worse, Shade even emphasized on that point, encouraging them, I mean. There obviously was a need to reproduce, but not once did it even linger on the idea of someone having a child.
In a nutshell, this book is most certainly not suitable for the better part of the audience it was geared towards. Though the book will tell you otherwise, the only thing that saved Shade's Children was a fantastic plot.
