In the time before Redwall Abbey was built,
there was no freedom for woodlanders. A cruel wildcat called Tsarmina
rules the place called Kotir, and the only thing that stops her from taking
over all of Mossflower is the woodlanders. With the aid of Martin
the Warrior, they must fight for their freedom, and their lives.
Mattimeo - by Brian Jacques [a tale of Redwall]
As the son of the Abbey warrior, Mattimeo
must live up to everyone's expectations. But then, one day, a cunning
fox called Slagar the Cruel kidnaps all of the young ones at Redwall Abbey,
including Mattimeo. His father Matthias leaves the Abbey with a group
of his friends to track down Slagar before the fox reaches his destination
with the kidnapped children, and Mattimeo and the other young ones become
slaves to the evil Malkaris.
Mariel of Redwall - by Brian Jacques [a tale of Redwall]
After falling overboard a searat ship during
a storm, the mousemaid is washed to shore and awakens with no recallection
of who she is or how she got there. Knotting a rope up as a weapon,
Mariel calls herself Storm Gullwacker, and makes her way towards Redwall
Abbey. Once she remembers her true identity, she must leave the peace
of the Abbey to save her father, Joseph the Bellmaker, from the searat
Gabool the Wild.
The young badger, Mara, has never really liked staying
at the mountain Salamandastron. One day, she and her best friend
Pikkle Ffolger the hare leave the mountain to go exploring, and return
to the mountain with the son of the warlord ferret, Ferrahgo the Assassin
and his friend. But when Mara and Pikkle leave again with the two
vermin, swearing never to return, they step straight into a trap layed
by the Assassin's army, while Ferrahgo meanwhile sets his plans for taking
over Salamandastron.
This is the story of the heroic warrior mouse and
guardian of Redwall Abbey before he came to Mossflower and Kotir.
A slave to the former corsair (whose name I currently cannot remember),
Martin seeks to free both himself and the other slaves with the help of
Laterose the mousemaid and her mole companion from Noonvale.
The Bellmaker - by Brian Jacques [a tale of Redwall]
This story takes place after Mariel of Redwall,
and details on one very particular adventure of Mariel and Dandin.
Southsward (located south of Mossflower) has been taken over by the fox-wolf
Urgan Nagru and his mate Silvamord. Joined by Bowley Pintips, Mariel
and Dandin rise against the fox-wolf, while Joseph the Bellmaker, Mariel's
father, and four others from Redwall Abbey leave to aid them in freeing
Southsward.
"Five will ride the Roaringburn, but only for shall
e'er return..."
Swart Sixclaw once had Sunflash the Mace as a slave,
but when the badger breaks free with the kestrel Skarlath, the ferret swears
to hunt him down, for the pain his dead six clawed-paw (coutesy of our
hero Sunflash) won't let him. Sunflash, meanwhile, must find his
way to his destiny at the mountain of Salamandastron. But one day,
Swart pays a visit to Redwall Abbey, leaving behind his six-clawed son,
whom they name Veil. Raised by the mousemaid Bryonny, Veil is still
a true vermin, and is declared outcast from Redwall Abbey when he commits
the ultimate crime...
The Tears of All Oceans are six, rose-coloured pearls
that bring misery wherever they reside, and are missing. Rumored
to be hidden inside Redwall Abbey, they are sought by Ublaz Mad Eyes, the
evil pine martin that rules Sampetra. When Ublaz's troops capture
the Abbot of Redwall and a young vole, they become ransom for the pearls.
The hedgehog Tansy must decipher a series of riddles to find the Tears
before it is too late, while an otter maid known as Grath Longfletch seeks
revenge upon Mad Eyes for the slaughter of her family.
The Long Patrol - by Brian Jacques [a tale of Redwall]
Tamello Tussock de Fformello desperately wants to
join the Long Patrol, but his father, a great hero himself, forbids it.
With the aid of his mother and the traveling squirrel Russa Nodrey, who
is also his traveling guide, Tammo leaves for Salamandastron to prove
himself worthy of joining the famed Long Patrol. Meanwhile, one of
the walls bordering Redwall Abbey is sinking, leaving the Abbey unprotected
against the dreaded Rapscallion Army, a ferocious band of murderers traveling
the land under the command of Damug Warfang...
Sabriel - by Garth Nix
Sabriel, a student at Wyverly College, notices
that something is amiss when her father, Abhorsen, doesn't come to visit
her like always. Her worries are confirmed when she recieves her
father's necromancing tools, which means that he is either dead, or something
else has happened to him. The thing about Abhorsen was that he was
a different type of necromancer; instead of raising people to life, he
put them back. Sabriel leaves Ancelstierre to find her father
in the Old Kingdom; a place that has fallen to shambles and is subject
to anarchy. But more is going on than Sabriel realizes; she suddenly
finds herself the new Abhorsen, befriending a Free Magic Creature confined
to cat shape named Moget, and dealing with more dead, zombies, and unsettling
scenes than can be counted....
The Book of Enchantments - by Patricia C. Wrede
This book is a collection of many sort stories,
varying from deadly magic to cruel sisters. Since it would be hard
to summarize all eleven, I will simply list their titles; Rikiki and
the Wizard; the Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn; Roses by Moonlight;
The Sixty-two Curses of Caliph Arenschadd; Earthwitch; The Sword-seller;
The Lorelei; Stronger Than Time; Cruel Sisters; Utensile Strength; [and
a recipe for] Quick After-Battle Triple Chocolate Cake.
Alanna: the First Adventure - by Tamora Pierce [Song of the
Lioness Quartet, book I]
Alanna and her twin brother Thom are being sent
away; Thom to become a knight and Alanna to learn magic. The twins,
however, don't agree with those plans. They change the document that
was to be sent to each of the places they were to go, so that Thom will
go to learn magic, and Alanna will become a knight. Since women are
not allowed to become knights, Alanna takes the alias of Alan, and because
she and Thom are twins, no one can tell Alanna is really a female.
This is the first part of the tale of Alanna; a young woman seeking to
become a knight against all odds, and she must keep her secret hidden well.
But along with knighthood comes danger, and an evil force is lurking in
more places than one.
In the Hands of the Goddess - by Tamora Pierce [Song of the
Lioness Quartet, book II]
On her quest to become a knight, Alanna recieves
the title of squire to her trusted friend and prince of Tortall, Jonathan.
But she has sensed something is wrong, and that someone is trying to dispose
of Jonathan, and the culprit is the one that is least expected, but t he
most powerful.
The Wo man Who Rides Like a Man - by Tamora Pierce [Song of the
Lioness, book III]
Finally a knight, Alanna finds herself Shaman to
a desert tribe. As the first woman shaman and knight, she
must try to change some of the ways of the people, and to protect them
from forboding danger.
Lioness Rampant - by Tamora Pierce [Song of the Lioness Quartet,
book IV]
The final book in the quartet. Alanna sets
out to find the Dominion Jewel for her country at war, a life-threatening
and arduos task. As if things were not ba d enough, Jonathan's uncle
Roger has been raised from the dead....... by none other than Thom.
Wild Magic - by Tamora Pierce [the Immortals Quartet, book I]
Veralidaine Sarrasri is a strange girl with strange
powers. She posesses the rare talent of Wild Magic, something that
can only be learned to control with time and training. Meanwhile,
the barrier between the realms of the gods and the rest of the world has
been disolved, allowing dangerous creatures that live forever unless killed,
a hard task, to seep into the human world.
Wolf-Speaker - by Tamora Pierce [the Immortals Quartet, book II]
Accompanied by the mage Numair, Dain encounters
a pack of wolves she is acquainted with through her wild magic. With
their help Numair and Dain must stop a new evil forming.
Emperor Mage - by Tamora Pierce [the Immortals Quartet, book III]
Summoned to a distant land for peace talks between
Tortall and Carthak, Daine discovers a wondrous kingdom, but also that
her own magic powers are growing again. She can also sense something
evil, and she can't help but notice something unsettling about the Emperor
Mage.
The Realms of the Gods - by Tamora Pierce [the Immortals Quartet,
book IV]
In what was actually a life-saving occurence,
Dain and Numair are pulled into the realms of the gods, where Dain is reunited
with her mother and meets her father. But she and Numair are also
needed back home in Tortall, where the war rages, as furious as ever.
And so, they brave the realms of the gods to make their way back home,
if they can survive.
The Ruby in the Smoke - by Philip Pullman [the Sally Lockhart
Trilogy, book I]
Sally Lockhart, a sixteen-year-old in Victorian
London, has suffered the tradgedy of her father's death, and now, is uncovering
the terrifying mystery seemingly intertwined within it. Delivered
to her was a note, and on it scrawled in incorrect spellings "Beware the
Seven Blessings", a phrase that causes a man to die from fright.
With the help of a young boy named Jim and a photographer, Frederick, she
must try to uncover the mystery that surrounds that message, her father's
death, a stolen ruby of great worth, and the opium trade.....and the answer
to them all may cost her her life.
Shadow in the North - by Philip Pullman [the Sally Lockhart
Trilogy, book II]
In the year 1878, Sally Lockhart, beholding the
status of business woman and fiancée, has a client who has lost
a substancial amount of money to the sudden collapse of a British shiping
firm. But beneath the collapse is another myster y, one involving
a magician named Mackinnon, tradgedy, and dark secrets. It is a mystery
that can be...must be solved, but with solution may come a tradgic
price.
The Tiger in the Well - by Philip Pullman [the Sally Lockhart
Trilogy, book III]
Finally living comfortably again after the loss
of her fiance, Sally Lockhart's world comes crashing down around her as
a stranger claims to be the father of her and Frederick's daughter, Harriet.
Someone has arranged for this to happen, casting shadow upon Sally's reputation,
and putting her and her daughter into danger; danger that forces her to
flee to the slums in London's East End. Somebody is trying to take
Harriet from Sally. Will she stand for it? The answer; not
bloody likely.
The Tin Princess - by Philip Pullman
Disappearing in The Ruby in the Smoke,
Adelaide has surfaced again, as princess of Razkavia. With Jim (previously
in The Sally Lockhart Trilogy) and Becky to aid her, she is forced
into the position of queen after her husband, about to assume the throne,
is assassinated. Adelaide must try her best to save the crumbling
country, ans keep herself, Jim, and Becky alive as well.
Dealing with Dragons - by Patricia C. Wrede [the Enchanted Forest
Chronicles, book I]
Princess Cimorene does not act like a princess,
does not look like a princess, and is quite sick of being a princess.
Bored with her life, she runs away to a dragon cave to try and become a
dragon's princess; a job that she knew her parents couldn't object to,
and seemed quite exciting. After becoming the devoted princess
of an enjoyable female dragon named Kazul, Cimorene learns that the dragon
king, Tokoz, was poisoned, and found some wizards snooping around in an
area they were restricted from. Some serious scheming and cheating
is taking place, and it's up to her and a few choice allies to stop it,
before all of the schemers and cheaters arrive at their goal.
Searching for Dragons - by Patricia C. Wrede [the Enchanted
Forest Chronicles, book II]
Mendanbar, the king of the enchanted forest, decided
to take a vacation one day, and one thing led to another. To be specific,
the vacation lead to a walk, which led to the discovering of an anhialated
area at the border of the enchanted forest, with dragon scales littering
the burned area. This eventually led to Mendanbar paying a visit
to the King of the Dragons, Kazul, and finding Cimorene instead.
The dragon king (dragons find it unnecessarily complicated to have a female
ruler be titled "queen"), Mendanbar learns, has been missing for quite
some time, and her Cheif Cook and Librarian (Cimorene) is quite worried,
which leads to the two of them embarking on a journey to find Kazul, which
leads to dicovering the wizards are once again up to no good, which leads
to something that puts the lives of Cimorene, Mendanbar, Kazul, and everyone
else in the Mountains of Mourning and the Enchanted Forest into danger.....
Calling on Dragons - by Patricia C. Wrede [the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, book III]
The wizards are, as usual, up to no good. After the discovery of their latest atempts at chaos by one of the witch Morwen's cats, she alerts King Mendanbar and Queen Cimorene, who is now bearing the future ruler of the Enchanted Forest. To make matters worse, the wizards have also stolen the magic sword of the Forest, and Mendanbar can't leave to retrieve it. And so, Morwen and Cimorene embark on a particularily dangerous but zany journey to save the Enchanted Forest.
Talking to Dragons - by Patricia C. Wrede [the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, book IV]
Daystar lives a relativly peaceful life in the Enchanted Forest with his mother, Cimorene. That was only until a wizard showed up at their door one day, of course. And so, without much explanation, Daystar is sent into the Forest with a strange sword, that just seems to have more surprising talents than thinkable. His mother tells him not to return until he has completed his mission, but the question is, what is his mission?
