22 inches of 45-inch wide fabric
|
Pattern: Trace or cut
out the pattern pieces. (Pattern for doll given below)
Cutting layout for dress
Layout: Lay body and hands
over a double layer of muslin. With a pencil, trace the pattern onto the
muslin. Do not cut out the pieces yet. This pencil line will be your stitching
line.

Stitching: Stitch around the pieces, leaving them open for turning where indicated on the pattern. Cut the pieces out leaving a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Clip the neck seam as shown. Turn them right sides facing out. Firmly stuff the head/body and the hands. Machine stitch the opening closed.
Dress: Cut a 30" by 20" for the dress. Fold under 1/2" of fabric toward the back side on each of the two long edges of the dress piece. Stitch each to form a casing for the drawstring. With right sides facing, stitch the short sides together to form a tube, leaving the casing unstitched.

Sleeves: Cut two pieces to measure 10" by 10" With right sides facing, stitch the sides together for each piece to form a tube.

Assembly: Adjust the dress seam to be the center back. Adjust the arm seam on the sleeve so that it centered on the underside. Fold 3/4" of the sleeve top over the dress where indicated and stitch through the dress and arm being careful not to stitch the casing. Lightly stuff the sleeves. Gather the sleeve ends leaving an opening for the hands. Glue or stitch the hands into the sleeve ends.
Drawstring: Insert a drawstring in both casings on the dress. Pull the bottom one up to leave a 4" diameter circle. Insert the head/body into the neck opening. Pull the drawstring up to tightly surround the neck. Tie both strings securely and cut off the excess.
Face: Use the marker to add dots for the eyes, or design your own face for the doll. Rub a small of red crayon onto a tissue and then rub the tissue onto cheek area.
Hair: Using doll hair or yarn, measure and cut the strands into 8" pieces. Glue the hair to the top of the head, then glue to each side of the head. Hanger: Using the cord, stitch a loop onto the back of the head for a hanger.
Object to hold: Select an object for the doll to hold. Glue or stitch the object to each hand to make it appear as if the Bag Lady is holding it.
