MABON RITUAL

The Opening Exhortation.

HPS: At this observance of the final equinox of the ending year,
Our awareness shifts to the coming dormancy of Mother Earth,
But even as the year begins to die
In the falling of leaves and the frosted, flowered death of gardened rows,
We gather here in affirmation of the love that engenders life,
Reproducing the fertile seed of birth and seasonal renewal.

Opening Blessing

HPS: Goddess of the field and god of the hunt,
All power of the element is yours.
I hereby declare created this Mabon Circle.
By the power invested in me in another time and another place, I declare this circle sealed.

The Blessing

All: Leaves fall, the days grow old.
The Goddess pulls Her mantle of Earth around Her.
As You, O great Sun God sail toward the West,
to the lands of eternal enchantment,
wrapped in the coolness of night.
Fruits ripen, seeds drop, the hours of night and day are balanced.
Chill winds blow from the South, wailing lament.
In this seeming extinction of nature's power, O blessed Goddess,
I know that life continues.
For spring is impossible without the second harvest,
as surely as life is impossible without death.
Blessings upon You, O Failing God,
as You journey into the lands of winter,
and into the Goddess's loving arms.

The Witches' Rune

[ Dance deosil facing inwards and holding hands, left palm upwards, right palm downwards, slowly at first, then ever faster and faster. Chant the following till the dancing reaches a climax, and the Cone of Power is raised.]

Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and comfort me.
Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and set me free.
Earth Mother, come to me. Heal my wounds and comfort me.
I am the Earth, I am the Earth, I am the form of the Goddess.
I am the Earth, I am the Earth, I am the form of the Goddess.

Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
Air, wind, breath and blow. Dawn light breezes go.
I am the breath, I am the breath, I am the breath of the Goddess.
I am the breath, I am the breath, I am the breath of the Goddess.

Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I'm higher.
Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I'm higher.
Fire, fire, warm desire, Change me, form me till I'm higher.
I am the heat, I am the heat, I am the heat of the Goddess.
I am the heat, I am the heat, I am the heat of the Goddess.

Water falling, rain and snow. Water rushing like a stream.
Water spouting up in steam, rolling in the ocean.
Water spouting up in steam, rolling in the ocean.
I am the tears, I am the tears, I am the tears of the Goddess.
I am the tears, I am the tears, I am the tears of the Goddess.

Earth, Air, Fire and Water, Earth, Air, Fire and water,
Come to us your son and daughter.
Come to us your son and daughter.
Come to us your son and daughter.
Come to us your son and daughter.

The Equinox Rite

(from the Golden Dawn)

HPS: Let us consecrate according to ancient custom the Return of Balance between Light and Dark.
East: (raising censor) Light.
West: (raising chalice) Dark.
East: Air.
West: Water.
East: East.
West: West.
HPS: (knocks with staff in middle of Circle) I am the Reconciler between them.
North: (raising Lamp) Heat.
South: (raising Salt) Cold.
North: Fire.
South: Earth:
North: North.
South: South.
HPS:(knocks with staff) I am the Reconciler between them.
East: One Creator.
North: One Preserver.
West: One Destroyer.
South: One Redeemer.
HPS: One Reconciler between them. (knocks with staff).

Proceed with Middle Pillar Ritual with priestess leading the visualisation thus:

HPS: Imagine sitting in a great Temple of ancient times facing West. The Black pillar of Binah - severity, the unseen -, is to the right; the White pillar of Chokmah - mercy, manifestation -, is to the left. Strike the perfect balance between them to create the Middle of beneficence.

Rite of Rededication.

High Priestess rises and lights the sacred fire in the Cauldron in the West.

HPS: Now hear the Exhortation to the Initiate in the ways of Wicca. (Read the Exhortation to the Initiate.)

HPS: Each of us has chosen the balanced path of Wicca to guide us on our journey. Today we rededicate ourselves, our souls and bodies, to the Wiccan way. To this end, let each stand forth in turn, reaffirm our intentions and petition the Lady and Lord to help us achieve a single goal within a full turn of the Wheel.

Each: I swear by this sacred fire that I, _______ (name), Priest(ess) and Witch, shall ever be true to the principles embodied by the Goddess and the God, and that I shall endeavour to always walk in the light of the lantern of Wicca. (Each then adds their own petitions on paper to the fire.)

HPS:Silvered Lady of the Shadowed Seasons,
We welcome the alchemical signs of Thine arrival
With sturdy trees of shimmering green
Transformed to tones of earthy yellow
And harvest-hues of blood dried rust.

Mabon Enactment

HPS: Silvered Lady of the Shadowed Seasons,
We welcome the wonders of Thy weather-witcheries,
Flinging scattered flakes of first frost
Upon ripened fields ready for reaping;
Harbingers of colder climes to come.

Silvered Lady of the Shadowed Seasons
We welcome the magick of Thy spoken spells;
Whispered vesperal incantations,
Invoking purple-woven vapors
Into twilight tapestries of early Autumn evening.

All: Silvered Lady of the Shadowed Seasons,
Thou art welcomed!
Blessed Be.

HP: Let us remember the former glory,
Light enthroned in celestial shafts of gold,
Traversing the sky in Summer strength,
Coaxing the growth
Of meadowed pastures and fertile fields.
Sun of Righteousness!
Sol Invictus!
Solar Savior!
We remember the glory that was Thine,
And take comfort
In the memory of Thy radiance!

From Thy majesty
Proceeded the very Light of nations,
The shining brilliance of illumined Truth,
And the manifest splendor of the Sacred.

Hallowed Blaze of Heaven,
Thou hast been the living Light,
Source of inspiration to sage and saint,
Priestess and prophet.

Therefore,
We add to the adoration of the ancients
As we ascribe to Thee praise and honor,
0 Waning King of planetary gods!

(The priest will then take the candle-lantern with him, going first to the eastern quarter and then to the western quarter, making the sign of the equal-armed solar cross with the candle-lantern as he says the following words.)

HP: God of Light, God of Life,
Dying daily,
Thou descendest into darkness;
Rising early,
Thy radiance renews the day!
(The priest then returns the candle-lantern to its proper place.)

The Autumn Equinox Meditation

(After the priest has finished the invocation, he shall step to the side of the altar opposite from the priestess as an appointed temple member will come forward to recite the following Earth Rite meditation.)

Covener: Brief is the balance but for an instant
Between the Lord of Light and the Lady of Shadows.
At this equinox of the ending year,
The waning Sun must bow before
The dark-kindled dragon-steeds of luminous gloom;
Serpent-stallions whose wondrous wings,
Silver-scaled with ebony glow,
Veil in cloud-cloaked, misty mantles,
The final, flickering beams of Midsummer warmth.

Swift they sail the turbulent sky
Upon leaf-swirling winds of wintry prophecy
From the far-country of the Crone;
Trampling into dusky dimness
The retreating rays of Summer's dying Lord.

(Here, the rest of the meditation is recited by another previously appointed covener. [Preferably one reader should be male and the other female.])

Covener: Summer now retreats into the perennial parade
Of passing seasons as the Wheel of the Year revolves
Once more to its place at the advent of the Season of the Dead.

The time has come for us to prepare for new beginnings,
Making ready our spirits for the restful reign of the coming Crone
In the womb of Winter's darkness.

But we have reasons to rejoice,
For at this last Sabbat of the dying year,
The love of the Lady and the gifts of the God
Surround us in a multicolored cornucopia of Autumn's abundance:
The ripened produce of blossom, fruit, and planted seed;
Parting gifts of Summer's gardened growth,

The Harvest Thanksgiving Litany

(At this time the priestess once again takes her place before the altar to lead the coven in the Thanksgiving Litany.)

HPS:Therefore, in joy do we give thanks to Thee,
Great Mother of Harvest Home,
Known from of old by a myriad of names
And a multitude of faces:
Anna Perenna, Pomona, Ceres,
Demeter, and Habondia;

And to Thee do we give hearty thanks,
0 Horned Consort of the Lady,
Pan of the Sacred Pipes,
Maddened Dionysius of the Holy Vine!

Lady and Lord,
Be pleased now, we pray, with these,
Our heart-felt acclamations of thanksgiving
As we remember the blessings of yet another year
Fast receding into the mists of memory.

For All Hallows past,
When we wisely recollect
That death is the doorway of emerging life.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For the softness of new fallen snow,
Glowing white beneath a Winter Moon,
Giving warmth to the slumbering earth.

All:THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For the fresh-cleansed scent of Springtime showers,
Quenching the thirst of new-grown grass.

All:THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For September winds that buoy
Children's dancing kites
As they skip
To invisible rhythms in the tousled air.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For Beltane beauty of hill and heath,
Splashed in colored profusion
Against a November canvas of breeze-rippled green.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For the Solstice Sun
Bathing our bodies with caressing warmth
As it sparkles watery fire
Along sand-strewn shores.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For corn shocks stacked in fields of Fall,
Scattered with pumpkins
Aflame in jack-o'-lantern gold.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

HPS: For pantries filled to overflowing,
Festive food upon the table,
And the satisfaction which comes
From the blessed Providence of the Gods.

All: THANKS WE GIVE TO OUR LADY AND LORD!

Preface proper for the Rite,

said by either High Priest or other covener.

Words of Consummation.

HP &HPS: Behold the Bounteous Mother and Her Lover the Lord,
whose union has brought forth fruitfulness!

PARTING PRAYERS

HPS: Goddess of this gilded season, transforming foliage from green to gold
And preparing the dying year for its resting place
In the bosom of Winter's embrace;
We graciously acknowledge the Mystery of Thy Presence
With every falling leaf,
And we ask Thy guidance through this season of lengthening shadows,
While we remember with thankfulness
The abundance of Thy harvest bounties which Thou hast given us.

All: All Hail, Farewell, and Blessed Be.

HP: Lingering Lord of fading light, we thank Thee for the warmth
Thou hast given us, as we look forward to Thy renewed ascendancy
When the Wheel of the Year turns full
And Summer skies shall frame Thy form in brilliant shades of azure noon!

All:All Hail, Farewell, and Blessed Be!

Final Benediction

HPS: May the equal balance of light and dark
Bless you with its insights
Into the equilibrium that is life itself!
