2. A losing battle

American individualism’ - the transformation of the entire globe into a liberal, civilian and peaceful American style marketplace by the infusion of American capi- tal and a multi-lateral security structure intended to spoil the urge for expansion by setting a status quo as status semper - was built on the quicksand fundament of dollar bills. The Washington Treaty system and the American investments required an environment of political and economic stability.

If either one of these two factors would collapse, the entire concept would soon be shattered.
But the economic side was not everything. In Asia, the power of Nietzsche’s ‘Wille zur Macht’ became evident as Japan left the international restraints behind and aimed at subduing others and establishing its reign over the Far East. ‘American individualism’ had always been weak on the realpolitik side, it had forgotten to con- sider the politics of power.
