Becoming The Stereo-Typical Goth
By Jessie Cardemus
Becoming the stereo-typical goth is harder then it seems. There are many gothic stereotypes. One must choose the stereotype to become. To begin with, one must be in the right frame of mind. To do this, it's suggested to do some reading and listening to music. Below is a simple list of 6 things to have read or listened to:
Make-up: The mopey goth usually sticks to the black and white, although most agree that having a clown white face isn't "in". They usually spoof up their eyes and lips with black, but that's it. They aren't too wild with their make-up. Clothes: Black is the base color for clothes, but we're not without color. Usually purples, greens, reds, blues, and metallics are worn as well. You'd never catch a mopey goth wearing pink, yellow, orange, or any other 'happy color'. Fabrics: Try cotton, velvet, gauze, and silk. Example: 'The Crow' by James O'Barr
Antiquity Goth Clothes: Black is the base color for all goths. Since antiquity goths like to re-create different eras, many colors are worn as well. Most stick with jewel-tones, black, white, and some metallics. The clothes are usually Victorian or Baroque inspired, like: poet shirts, cigarette pants, frock coats, capes, skirts with bustles, etc. Fabric: Try velvet, gauze, satin, cotton, silk, wool, rayon. Example: 'Vampire Chronicles' by Anne Rice
Glitter Goth Clothes: Black is the base color, but in this case shiny or sparkly black is better then matte. Glitter goths stick to the same rules as other goths, no pink, no orange, no yellow. If it sparkles or shines, it's a good bet that the stereo-typical glitter goth would wear it. Fabric: Try sequined fabric, gauze, lace, and other ethereal/sparkly fabrics. Example: A mix between SNL's 'Goth Talk' and 'Velvet Goldmine' |
In a blur of motions, Sean ran down the short corridor and took the first left. Where was his mom? His dad? His many brothers and sisters? Gone. Sean stopped when he came to a fork. Straight or right? Taking a right, Sean ran as fast as he could, not seeing any other turns. "Hello?" Sean yelled. "Is anyone there?" No answer. Sean stopped to listen. In the distance, he could hear a soft hissing sound. Staying quiet with fear, Sean nearly tiptoed down the corridor to an upcoming left turn. Sean's heart was beating in his ears. Scared and nervous were adjectives that easily described him. Something was different though. The air. Something smelled wonderful, liked baked bread. Being male and just waking up, he was hungry. He tried to follow the smell.

As he calm down with the thought of finding food, he heard the hissing noise again. It was closer now. Trying to figure out what made the sound and trying to get to the food, Sean turned the corner in an unnerved state. Pain roared through his tiny body until the second came where he was dead. * * * * * * * "That's the third one this week", a white coat said. He wrote something down on his clipboard. "We should make the maze easier." His colleague nodded and said, "I'll go get another mouse." The other scientist removed the black covering that went over the blue maze. There were small lights imbedded into the material to provide some light to the test animals. He placed the, now full, snake into its cage and waited for the other scientist to return with the next mouse. The End
