Ruth Beasley

Learning the Birds
Early Days

Born and raised in Canadian, Texas, Ruth (Rogers Erickson) Beasley lived for more than twenty years in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon her return to Texas in 1999, she moved to a ranch-house fifteen cattle-guards from town and discovered an abiding fascination for the world of birds. Her fresh, often humorous approach has appeal both for those immersed in birds, and those who are new to the subject. Ruth takes her readers on many a surprising journey, all in the name of learning the birds.

Learning the Birds began as a newspaper column in The Canadian Record, where it continues to appear every other week (or thereabouts). (The Canadian Record appears on Canadian, Texas, newsstands every Thursday.) Learning the Birds is also a feature of regional programming on the NPR affiliate, High Plains Public Radio, a station serving the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, Kansas, and southern Nebraska. The five-minute module airs twice a week. More information can be found at http://www.learningthebirds.com.
