Fritz Selbmann

He started working as a miner at the age of 17. During WW 1 he served as a soldier and in 1918 became a member of a Workers' and Soldier council.He joined the USPD in 1920 and the German Communist Party in 1922.He was often arrested and imprisoned for political activities in the Weimar Republic. He was a member of parliament and political secretary for the districts of Upper Silesia and Saxony. He was arrested in 1933 and was imprisoned for 12 years in facist camps ("The Long Night", 1961).

After being freed from fascism he served the DDR in high ranking positions
(as Minister foor Industry, Minister for Heavy Industry and Deputy Chief of the State Planning Commission and the Peoples' des Volkswirtschaftsrates).

He was a freelance writer residing in Berlin until his death in 1975.His other novels : "The Homecoming of Joachim Ott" (1962) "Sons of Wolves" (1965) and his autobiography Alternative, Bilanz, Credo" (1970). "Alternatives, Total Sum, Creed" (1970)
