1771-1829

First commissioned in 1787, he served in Holland 1788-89, and in 1793 became an aide-de-camp to the Duke of York. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1795, he was a prisoner in France 1796-97. In 1799 he served as a liaison officer
to Suvorov's Russian army in North Italy. From 1802-05 he was adjutant general in India, but on returning to Europe he was again attached to the Russian army for the campaign that ended at Austerlitz, at which battle he was present. From 1806-07 he was commandant of Syracuse in Sicily. In 1898 he was elected a member of parliament and began a political career that
continued until 1818, with interruptions for military service. he served Sir John Moore as adjutant general during the Corunna campaign, and in 1810 was promoted to major general. From 1811-14 he commanded the 6th Division under Wellington in the Peninsula, and played a notable part at Salamanca. In 1814 he was made a lieutenant general (having been knighted the previous year), and in 1815 he fought at Waterloo.
