Commissioned a cornet in 1787, he served
in the West Indies, Ireland, and Egypt. He was MP for Inniskillen
from 1798-1800 and for Fermanagh, 1803-23, and fought as a brigadier
general in Sicily, 180608. Cole was promoted to
major general in 1808 and then commanded the 4th Division in the
Peninsula from 1809 to 1814. he was knighted in 1813 and promoted
to lieutenant general in 1813. he subsequently became Governor
of Mauritius (1823-28) and of Cape Colony (1828-33), and was promoted
to full general in 1830.
