As a subaltern he studied at Strasburg,
and in 1793 served as an aide-de-camp at Toulon. In 1794 he became
lieutenant colonel of the 90th Foot, fought in Egypt in 1801 (being
wounded before Alexandria), served in Ireland, and was promoted
to major general in 1805. After service in Hanover, he was sent
to the Peninsula, fought at police and Corunna, and commanded
division at Talavera (1809). His health broke down in 1810, but
he returned to duty in 1811 an won an Action at Merida. In 1812
he was promoted to lieutenant general and knighted, captured Almaraz,
commanded the right wing at Vitoria, and blockaded Pamplona. He
fought with distinction at the Nivelle and Nive battles, as well
as at Bayonne and Toulouse. he was created a baron in 1814. next
year he was sent on a mission to the Prince of Orange and given
command of the First Allied Corps. At Waterloo he arrived in time
to lead Adams' brigade toward the end of the battle. he was second-in-command
of the Army of Occupation in France from 1815-18. In 1825 he became
a full general and was Commander in Chief in England from 1825-29.
His viscountcy dates from 1842.
