The elder brother of Fitzroy James henry, and known as "Lord Edward Somerset," he served with cavalry during the campaign in Holland (1799) and later through all the Peninsular War. At Waterloo he commanded a cavalry brigade under the overall control of Lord Uxbridge. he later commanded the British cavalry during the occupation of France and was ultimately promoted to full general in 1841.
