The Russian Officer Corps of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars 1785-1815 - Alexander Mikaberidze This book is a great piece of writing, an excellent form of encyclopedia of the officers, commanders and generals of the Russian army through the years the book covers. The book is at over 534 pages. And it is filled with biographies of officers, everything from Alexander Chechensky whom is extremly unknown commander, to Barclay the Tolly and Kutuzov that are famous commanders. But it is not just biographies, they have an excellent introduction that i find to be of excellent quality, and that is where the author explains how the Russian Officer Corps where organized. |
There he tells us facts like how many of the officers could read, how educated where they, how many could speak French, and so forth. He explains what the titles where in the Russian army, and give direct comparisations to the other european titles. Truly an remarkable research in my eyes and an excellent introduction. The contents of the book is marvelous. And the only thing i find a little bit sad is the lack of colour portraits, for me they add a level of "realism", and in my opinion there should have been atleast some huge colour portraits of some of the major commanders of the war in the book. But that is the only thing i have to complain about in this book. |
