1760-1824
After joining the Prussian army in 1775,
he fought in the Campaign of 1793 and in 1801 was promoted to
major general. In 1806 he fought Soult at Schleiz and later commanded
Hobenlohe's advance guard before sharing in the debacle of Jena.
In 1813 he conducted the siege of Stettin before being given command
of IV Corps, with which he fought at Gross-Beeren and Dennewitz.
After Leipzig he besieged and took Torgau and then retook Wittenberg
in a furious storming that earned him his title. In 1815 he was
given command of VI Corps, but entered on operations after Waterloo
had been fought.
